The July figures are in…

It’s a month since Wimbledon. The 15 tour events that have taken place since SW19 have thrown up plenty of big prices and ‘surprise’ finalists.

The updated Calendar on my Ones to Watch website shows several tournament winners at odds of 25/1, 33/1 and 40/1. Along with runners-up at massive prices including 50/1, 66/1 and 100/1.

Overall, those 15 July tournaments produced 10 winners at odds of 12/1+. And 11 runners-up at odds of 10/1+.

That double-figures+ odds trend matches the year-to-date figures, with my records showing 67% of all finalists in 2019 going off at pre-tournament prices of 10/1+. That’s 117 out of 174 finalists, from 87 events played.

The trend remains as clear as ever. Big odds do payout. Underdogs and outsiders do get to tournament finals and compete for trophies.

Player update…

Our annual pre-seasonOnes to Watch list’ contained 10 players to look out for this year. A few of those names have done well recently, finding themselves at the business end of tournaments in the last month:

  • Alex De Minaur won his second ATP title of the year, lifting the Atlanta trophy at 8/1
  • Daniil Medvedev reached his fourth final of the season, finishing a 10/1 runner-up at Washington last week
  • Nicolas Jarry reached his second final of the campaign and won his maiden ATP Tour title, lifting the Bastad trophy at 18/1
  • And in the women’s, Aryna Sabalenka made the finals of an event for the first time since week one of the season, re-finding her form to finish runner-up at WTA San Jose at 7/1

One or two of our Ones to Watch in 2019 players could make a splash at big prices in New York later this month…

US Open coming up…

The US Open is on the way. The road to New York is underway with big ‘Masters’ events on North American hard courts in Montreal, Toronta and Cincinnati taking place this fortnight.

We’ll be looking in more detail at the fourth Grand Slam of the year soon, with a couple of outsiders to follow at enticing prices. The US Open starts on 26th August. More on that throughout the month.

Enjoy the tennis…

Best wishes,
