Old timers back in the big-time…

The Australian Open semi finals start in the early hours of Thursday morning. And 6 of the 8 remaining players in the Men’s and Women’s draws are aged 30 or over

As I’ve said many a time ahead of recent Grand Slams: expect surprises. We’ve certainly seen some big ones in Melbourne…

For the first time in Australian Open history, both the Men’s & Women’s top seeds and reigning champions were knocked out before the quarter finals (Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Angelique Kerber).

We’re left with a semi final line-up made up of several players that traded at massive pre-tournament prices:

Roger Federer (22/1) v Stan Wawrinka (12/1)
Rafael Nadal (16/1) v Grigor Dimitrov (40/1)

Coco Vandeweghe (150/1) v Venus Williams (100/1)
Mirjana Lucic-Baroni (1,000/1) v Serena Williams (3/1)

Lucic-Baroni is 34 years of age, Nadal is 30, Wawrinka is 31, Federer and Serena are both 35 and Venus is 36…

First timers in with a shout…

Some of those semi final names were available at even bigger prices with the odd firm. Anyone who’s on Dimitrov at the standout opening weekend 60/1 with Boylesports is sitting on a bet now priced at just 7/1 at best…

The 25-year-old Dimitrov has been the best-performing of the players in my Australian Open Betting Guide Outright Winner advice (the first part of my 2017 Grand Slam package. The doors open again ahead of the French Open).

And Dimitrov is one of the two players left in the Australian Open that are aged below 30, and in with a real chance of making a first Grand Slam final this week.

The other is Women’s semi finalist Coco Vandeweghe…

One to Watch at 25/1 this summer…

Coco Vandeweghe actually featured in my Australian Open Ones to Watch report last year, flagged up as a noteworthy 200/1 outsider. She went out in the 1st Round on that occasion. But has bounced back with some style in Melbourne this year – including knocking out reigning champ and World No.1 Angelique Kerber, in straight sets.

Wimbledon is the tournament perhaps best suited to Vandeweghe’s big-serving, power-play game though…

Coco made the 4th Round at Wimbledon last summer, and the quarter finals in 2015. And her two WTA Tour titles to date have both come at a grass court tournament.

The word is starting to get out about Coco now. But with the Women’s game looking wide open, with doubts over almost all of the current Top 10, the American looks worth getting in the book for a speculative early bet for Wimbledon this summer…

  • Coco Vandeweghe is currently 25/1 with Ladbrokes22/1 with BetVictor and 20/1 with Bet365, Skybet, Boylesports, Paddy Power and Betway (Each Way terms: 1/2 odds 1-2 places)

P.S

Watch Coco in action…

Coco plays Venus Williams in the Aussie Open semi finals in the early hours of Thursday morning. If you want to see her in action – or watch any of the other semis or the finals, get yourself over to Bet365 and take advantage of their Live Streaming service.

I’ll be back next week with more free Ones to Watch for you, when the weekly Tours resume…

Best wishes,

Tom Wilson
