Notes from the Australian Open - week 2...

Thursday 25th January 2024

150/1 shots aren’t supposed to get to the semi finals…

So I supposed we shouldn’t be too gutted that Linda Noskova fell in the Australian Open quarter finals this week…

I had flagged up 19-year-old Ones to Watch name Noskova at 150/1 last October, and then again in last week’s email, here.

The Czech teenager went on to produce the shock of the tournament last Saturday, knocking out world no.1 and Aussie Open favourite, Iga Swiatek. A match upset that paid 9/1.

If 150/1 outsiders aren’t supposed to get to the semis. Then 500/1 shots certainly aren’t supposed to reach the final four….

500/1 was Dayana Yastremska’s price on Day 1 of the Australian Open last week. The 23-year-old Ukrainian will play in this morning’s semi final against 21-year-old Qinwen Zheng of China….

  • Noskova and Qinwen Zheng both featured in my Ones to Watch in 2024 Report

  • Yastremska is a Ones to Watch name from before the pandemic, highlighted back in our 2019 report (which also included Aryna Sabalenka and Daniil Medvedev, two Top 10 players these days - and both through to the semi finals here in Australia)

Wide open…

I’ve been saying this for several years now. And I’ll say it again…

Women’s Grand Slams are up for grabs. Wide open…

As I reported before the tournament, the stats and prices show it…

That’s proved the case yet again this Melbourne fortnight.

With either 33/1 Qinwen Zheng or 500/1 Dayana Yastremska set to feature in this weekend’s women’s final. The revised numbers will look like this:

  • 11 of the last 16 women's Grand Slams will have produced at least one finalist at Day 1 odds of 33/1+

  • And 10 of the last 28 women’s Grand Slam finalists will have started the tournament as 100/1+ outsiders

Remarkable stuff.

And that’s why we play the big prices here at Ones to Watch.

As it stands for this tournament, members of my Australian Open 2024 Daily Email Service will have an underdog on their side in Saturday's final…

  • Qinwen Zheng was our Each Way pick on Day 1 of the tournament - in the book at 33/1, 30/1, or 28/1. Going into this morning’s semi final, she’s now just 5/1 to go all the way…

  • And Dayana Yastremska was advised before the quarter finals as a saver bet - at odds of 33/1, 30/1, 28/1, or 25/1. Yastremska is now 14/1…
