In your Ones to Watch email today:
An update from Paris...
None of the six big-priced players in our French Open 2017 Ones to Watch report have made it through to the second week.
But as anticipated, this ‘Serena-less’ Grand Slam has once again provided a few surprises in the Women’s event...
Thursday’s semi final will see Jelena Ostapenko (100/1 pre-tournament) take on Timea Bacsinszky (50/1) – with both players looking to reach their first ever Grand Slam final.
It’s a big day for a number of reasons – tomorrow just happens to be both Ostapenko AND Bacsinszky’s birthdays...
Ostapenko and Svitolina breaking through...
Ostapenko turns 20 years of age, and this is proving a breakthrough event for the young Latvian. She featured as one of the ten up-and-coming players on our Ones to Watch in 2017 list.
Her opponent, Bacsinsky stands on the brink of her biggest career achievement to date on what will be her 28th birthday.
On the opposite side of the Women’s draw, 22-year-old Elina Svitolina faces tournament favourite Simona Halep this afternoon, playing for a place in the other semi final.
Svitolina also featured on our 2017 list and has reached the French Open quarter finals for the second time in three years.
The next few days in Paris should prove interesting. And with Wimbledon & the US Open and the rest of the summer schedule to come, this week should also tell us something about the mindset of the players. Both of those Women breaking through for the first time; and in the Men’s, the big-moment status of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka who are all at the time of writing still in contention.
