Our old friend Sabine looks value today...
Friday 23rd June 2017
In your Ones to Watch email today:
Another happy winner...
Queen’s Club has been taken over by One to Watch readers this week...
On Wednesday I had an email from Barry Flatman, who is the third reader I’ve heard from who has won tickets from the competition we flagged up a fortnight ago:
“RE: Breafast with Greg Rusedski: Hi Tom, is it catching? I have also won two centre court tickets at Queen’s for the quarter finals on Friday and you will never guess who is coming to breakfast. Taking my tennis nut mum who is thrilled to pieces, really looking forward to the day. All I have left to say is a massive thank you.”
On the Ones to Watch betting front our 33/1 pick Barbora Strycova wasn’t able to repeat last year’s run to the WTA Birmingham final. But if we keep going for those attractive Outright Winner, Each Way prices then we will land a big one when our time comes – and it will be worth the wait.
As a taster of the kind of angle I go for in the daily match betting markets, here’s a match and a price that has caught my eye in Mallorca today...
Our old friend Sabine looks value today...
Julia Goerges v Sabine Lisicki
Event: WTA Mallorca
Surface: Grass
Rankings: Goerges #45, Lisicki #115
Head-to-Head: Lisicki 2-1 (last meeting Lisicki 2015)
Match scheduled: 4pm, BT Sport
Back in 2013, Sabine Lisicki had a great run to the Wimbledon final – providing long-term members with a 10/1 winner when she beat Serena Williams on the way, and a huge Each Way place payout from tournament odds of 80/1.
Injuries have hampered the likeable German throughout her career, and since that Wimbledon summer there hasn’t been much to cheer about for Sabine.
However, right now she’s back from her latest injury layoff (bicep tendon), and just in time for the grass court season, too...
In the past Sabine has rushed back from injury to get back on court, but this time it seems she has taken the patient approach. And in her own words: “Turns out I got to come back on my favourite surface!”
Grass is certainly Lisicki’s best surface – suiting her big serve and power-hitting game. As well as that runner-up appearance in 2014, Lisicki also reached the Wimbledon quarter finals in 2012 and the Wimbledon semi finals in 2011...
So far this week, back on grass and playing in Mallorca, Sabine has racked up two decent results so far and looks a bit of value as the match underdog against fellow German, Julia Goerges today.
Goerges also hits big and can be very dangerous when she’s on a roll – but that doesn’t happen too often and rarely for a whole tournament (or even a whole match). That might sound a little harsh but my point here is that the rankings don’t tell the whole story (due to Sabine’s injury layoff), and other evidence points to Lisicki as a match pick here...
Until Mallorca this week, Goerges hadn’t won a competitive grass court match since the 2012 Olympics in London. After that came a run of six consecutive grass court defeats in her next six appearances at grass court events.
Add in the fact that Lisicki is back and keen, and has a winning head-to-head record v her compatriot, and our old friend looks well worth backing as the underdog today.
One to Watch today:
As I say, I’ll be back later with your Wimbledon report. And you probably won’t be surprised to learn that Sabine is looking like being on my list right now...
See you tonight, around 7pm.
Enjoy the tennis...
Best wishes,
