20/1 Wozniacki in the quarter finals...

Thursday 16th March 2017

In your Ones to Watch email today:

  • Indian Wells update...
  • 20/1 Wozniacki in the quarter finals...
  • Coming up...

So far, our plan of avoiding the favourites and the top-ranked players at Indian Wells is looking like a good move...

We’re at the quarter final stage of the first ‘Masters’ event of the season, and just like in the first Grand Slam of the year at the Australian Open, the Men’s Top 2 are both out before the quarter finals...

World No.1 Andy Murray came a cropper in his opening match here at Indian Wells, losing in straight sets to 12/1 match outsider and World No.129, Vasek Pospisil.

And World No.2 Novak Djokovic was also taken out, losing last night to World No.16 Nick Kyrgios in straight sets, for the second time in as many tournaments. The fiery young Aussie is playing the best I think I’ve ever seen him: still yet to lose his serve, and not gobbing off on court too much, either...

A pre-tournament 33/1 outsider, Kyrgios is now 5/1 at best – next up, a quarter final match against the resurgent Roger Federer. Kyrgios won their only previous encounter.

20/1 Wozniacki in the quarter finals...

On to the Women’s event and our Ones to Watch picks from last week’s email, and it’s a similar story with the Top 2 out of action here, too...

Serena Williams was already out through injury, and Angelique Kerber lost to World No.15 Elena Vesnina.

In the top half of the draw, tournament favourite Karolina Pliskova remains at the top of the list. My 14/1 pick Johanna Konta put in a disappointing performance in her second match, with World No.25 Caroline Garcia coming from a set down to beat our player, 2-1.

But in the bottom half of the draw, there’s all to play for...

Kerber is out. And after three consecutive 2-0 wins in the early rounds, our 18/1 and 20/1 Each Way pick Caroline Wozniacki is looking pretty good. She’s been cut to 7/2 (4.50) for the title, making her the second favourite behind 5/4 (2.25) Pliskova.

We’ve got value on our side. Wozniacki is a 2/5 (1.40) favourite to beat Kristina Mladenovic in the quarter finals this evening – our One to Watch has a 3-0 career head-to-head win record v the Frenchwoman, with all of those wins coming on hard courts, and the most recent victory coming towards the end of last season.

The other quarter final in that section of the draw is Vesnina v Venus Williams. Should they meet in the semi finals, Wozniacki has a winning 6-2 head-to-head record v Vesnina, and a losing 7-0 record v Venus.

If you wanted to have a ‘saver bet’ from here, my pointer would be for Venus at 6/1. But personally I’m sticking with the in-form and fit-looking Wozniacki right now.

  • Wozniacki v Mladenovic is live on BT Sport from 6pm this evening

Coming up...

Next week we’ll be focusing on the big event in Florida – the Miami Open. That’s another prestigious Masters tournament, just like Indian Wells. I’ll be in touch on Tuesday with my analysis and Ones to Watch.

P.S
And before then, lookout for a special email from me on Saturday – with details of an exclusive NEW moneymaking opportunity...

Best wishes,
