This week’s One to Watch is a player I’ve been following for quite a while. At 26 years of age, David Goffin has reached the Top 10 and the highest ranking of his career...
And there could be more to come.
The diminutive Belgian has made two ATP finals already this season and I’d be surprised if we don’t see more.
One to Watch – now and in Paris...
As I write, Goffin is nicely positioned in the ATP Rome Masters draw at 20/1 Each Way with BetVictor (who are offering 1/2 odds Each Way for 1-2 places, as opposed to other firms offering just 1/3rd the odds).
With Andy Murray knocked out of the top half of the Rome draw, the path is there for someone to come through and make the final. Big guns Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are both in the bottom half.
Goffin faces Marin Cilic at 11.30am today so you may need to be quick to back our man before then. Goffin is 4/6 (1.67) favourite to win that one, and has a 4-1 career head-to-head record v Cilic – including 2 out of 2 wins on clay.
If he gets through that, Goffin could face former French Open champ Stan Wawrinka. A tough match, but Goffin did win their most recent encounter, last season.
Other well known names in the top half include Milos Raonic (Goffin beat him on clay just the other week) and Tomas Berdych (Goffin has won their only meeting on clay).
Goffin has won 10 out of 13 matches on clay so far in 2017 – and 2 of those 3 defeats were against the resurgent clay court king, Rafael Nadal. The Belgian is showing impressive form and consistency and could be approaching the peak period of his career.
He made the semi finals at the Monte Carlo Masters on clay recently, and is most definitely One to Watch right now at big Each Way prices – both in Rome this week at 20/1, and as a noteworthy outsider for the French Open at 50/1 too.
