Sticking with Siegemund at 40/1…
I’ve already mentioned Laura Siegemund a couple of times this month. The 30-year-old German is on the injury comeback, currently ranked #100. And as we noted at the start of the month, she’s something of a clay-court specialist – with 352 of her 468 career match wins coming on the surface (75%).
This week Siegemund returns to the scene of her biggest triumph to date, playing her ‘home’ tournament, on clay in Stuttgart with the title to defend…
Siegemund was a 33/1 winner here last season, and reached the final the year before, too. On both those runs she beat Simona Halep en route. This week she’ll need to do the same again, placed in the top half of the WTA Stuttgart 2018 draw with World No.1 Halep a potential quarter final opponent.
The price here reflects both the injury comeback and the presence of some big names in the field, with Siegemund available at 40/1 and 33/1…
Those are underdog prices and while we can’t know if the German reigning champ is fully fit (she withdrew from WTA Lugano when we backed her at 20/1 a couple of weeks ago), Siegemund seems to have been appearing in all the right places in the PR build-up to this event, so the signs are she is here to give it her very best attempt.
Having followed her comeback so far, it makes sense to stick with Siegemund at attractive prices, in what is one of the main events that she been aiming for since injury struck on court last May.
The ideal Outright Winner bet (other than getting an Each Way player to the final, of course) is one that ‘pays for itself.’ We have an opportunity to pretty much do that today by backing Siegemund to win her opening match v Barbora Strycova (7pm+, BT Sport).
The 32-year-old Czech has been in poor form recently, losing 4 matches in a row. Strycova is a bit of a hothead and with the crowd & setting all sure to be geared around a keen-to-succeed Siegemund here, this looks a good opportunity for our pick to get off to a winning start.
