Medvedev in the quarter finals…
We had three Outright Winner picks this week and one of them is still standing.
Daniil Medvedev (20/1 Each Way) is the man for us at ATP Barcelona, where he’s in the quarter finals today.
Medvedev is now 8/1 for the title. Our Russian one to watch is a 2/7 (1.29) favourite to beat Nicolas Jarry this morning (11.30am). Jarry is another player on our Ones to Watch in 2019 list.
Mladenovic building momentum…
There’s one match on today’s schedule that I like for a Match Winner single, and that’s Kristina Mladenovic to beat Petra Martic in Istanbul.
The 25-year-old Frenchwomen has slumped down the rankings in the last 12 months or so. Mladenovic has been doing well in Doubles, so her game never completely went away. The Singles tour is where the real glory is though and the appointment of Sascha Bajin as her new coach looks like a great move from Kristina.
Bajin was Noami Osaka’s coach during her run to World No.1 and back to back Grand Slam titles at the US Open 2018 and Australian Open 2019. His appointment suggest Mladenovic is serious about getting back up the rankings and trying to winning trophies.
After working together on an unofficial basis at Miami last month, this week in Istanbul is their first tournament as player & coach. And the impact looks to have been immediate, with two 2-0 wins so far including an emphatic 6-1, 6-2 win in the last round, after seeing off another of our Ones to Watch in 2019, Dayana Yastremska in the 1st Round.
Today’s opponent Petra Martic goes off as the favourite and is 26 spots higher in the world rankings (No.40). But the 28-year-old Croatian has had a much tougher time of it so far this week, having to come from a set down in both her matches, to eventually prevail 2-1 on both occasions.
Those matches took over two hours each. On Thursday, Martic was on court for over an hour longer than Mladenovic.
Freshness and momentum are on the French player’s side today, and she stands out as the slight underdog in the match betting.
