Kontaveit in the quarter finals tonight...

Friday 23rd April 2021

In your Ones to Watch email today:

  • WTA Stuttgart…
  • Quarter Finals…
  • Clay season continues next week…

Our ‘big ones’ didn’t last long this week, falling in the early rounds. But teenagers like Carlos Alcaraz and Lorenzo Musetti are on our radar for a reason. And at odds of 80/1 and 66/1, I’m going to keep on following them when the tournaments suit. The feeling with these two young men is it’s a matter of when, not if, they win they reach a first ATP final.

Kontaveit in the quarter finals tonight…

We’ve got one Outright Winner pick left running this week, and that’s Anett Kontaveit at WTA Stuttgart. The Estonian is through to the quarter final – the fourth time in a row that she’s reached this stage at this venue.

From odds of 25/1 – 20/1 at the start of the week, Anett is now 10/1 for the title. The Stuttgart quarter final line-up is a high quality one:

Top half of the draw:

Ashleigh Barty v Karolina Pliskova
Elina Svitolina v Petra Kvitova

Bottom half:

Ekaterina Alexandrova v Simona Halep
Aryna Sabalenka v Anett Kontaveit

The career head-to-head between Sabalenka and Kontaveit is 3-0 against our player, but today will be the first time they meet on clay.

The bookies have Kontaveit as the match underdog against Sabalenka, and that’s understandable based on rankings, titles, and status. Anett is plenty good enough to win this match, but she needs to not let the Belarusian intimidate her.

I’ll be tuning in to watch. The match is scheduled for 7pm+, but could be a bit later depending on how the other quarter finals go.

  • WTA Stuttgart is being shown live on Amazon Prime Video. And you can also watch online with live streaming via your betting account with firms such as Bet365

The clay season continues next week with two men’s events starting from Monday, in Estoril and Munich.

Followed swiftly by the ATP & WTA Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid, which is a major signpost on the road to Roland Garros.

I’ll be back on Sunday night with my first thoughts on next week’s tournaments & prices. And throughout May as we continue to build up to the French Open in Paris.

P.S
Click here to read a nice piece on Leylah Fernandez, further marking the Canadian teenager out as One to Watch this season and beyond.

Earlier this week, we got Fernandez in the book as a 100/1+ early-bird outsider for the French Open.

Enjoy the tennis…

Best wishes,

Tom Wilson
