Tennis Betting Advice - April 2023
Madrid Masters - Ones to Watch at 33/1 and 100/1...
Monday 24th April 2023
There's a big tournament on the clay this week. The Mutua Madrid Open sees both the men & women in action in this 'Masters' 1000-grade event...
Starting Tuesday, and running until Sunday 7th May - a fortnight-long event which gives Madrid significant status on the 2023 ATP & WTA calendars...
I've got four picks to get in the book from day one. None of these players will be in 1st-round action on the opening day or two. But I'm away from my desk on Tuesday, with a 7.30am train to catch - and wanted to get the best Outright Winner prices to you before a ball was hit...
In the men's event, our Paris Masters 2022 friend, young Holger Rune. The Dane is still a teenager as I write, turning 20 on 29th April. Holger arrives in Spain riding back-to-back finals in his first two clay-court tournaments of the year. Runner-up at the Monte Carlo Masters, and then lifting the trophy last week in Munich. He's got the game, he's got the attitude, and if he stays fits, Rune is now a genuine contender for all the big titles.
It's swings & roundabouts with the bookies' Each Way terms for ATP Madrid. Rune is a top-price 20/1 with firms offering 1/3 odds for 1-2 places. Or 16/1 with bookies offering the better place terms of 1/2 odds 1-2. See below for options
For the women's event, I like these three as big-hitting players with the potential to upset the odds, and mount a challenge should the favourites come unstuck...
Recent WTA 1000 Miami Open winner Petra Kvitova isn't known for her clay pedigree. But the powerful left-hander has won this Madrid title three times in her illustrious career - making it the only clay-court event that Petra has won more than once. If she's fit after a recent layoff after Miami, then she can be expected to give her all as a 33/1+ outsider. Betfred are 50/1 as I write, with a few others at 40/1.
Another 33/1 shot to look out for here is our Ones to Watch youngster, Anastasia Potapova. The Russian is on the up, as we've noted a couple of times already when backing her this season. Last week Anastasia hit the bar for us, reaching the WTA Stuttgart semi finals when backed as a 66/1 Each Way underdog. We don't want to miss her when a big win comes along - and she's getting closer.
Finally, another young Ones to Watch pick with the potential to outperform the big prices this season. Odds of 100/1 catch the eye for Marta Kostyuk. We've noted that the Ukrainian is playing with fire in her belly. When it all clicks, Marta has the power and the attacking oomph to take down a big name or two.
