The man I want to add here is 22-year-old Ones to Watch name, Jiri Lehecka...
The young Czech got an honourable mention on the penultimate page of my pre-season report. And, barring a recent injury setback, Lehecka has been progressing very well indeed so far in 2024...
Jiri has already won a first ATP title this year. And he's set to climb into the Top 30 in the world rankings next week.
With the field in the top half of the Madrid Open seeing star names Jannik Sinner and Rafael Nadal go into Tuesday's round of Last 16 with injury or fitness question marks hanging over them, respectively. A clean and hard-hitting young gun like Lehecka - who loves to go up against a higher-ranked player and take the game to them - could be just the man to spring the surprise here.
Unibet & co are going 60/1 as I write. With the fixed odds books at spread betting sites SpreadEx & Sporting Index offering 50/1. And 33/1 a very acceptable Each Way, outsider price with the mainstream/ high street firms...
If Sinner and/ or Nadal pull out on Tuesday, then these prices will tumble. Bet365 have gone from 33/1 to 20/1, while I've been writing this email...
