Porsche Tennis Grand Prix: Roll the dice at 100/1...
Monday 14th April 2025
If it’s favourites you’re after, then the top two are easy to back in Stuttgart this week…
World no.1 Aryna Sabalenka has got to the final here, three times out of four. Last month’s Miami Open champion is 3/1 (4.0) to carry that winning form over to the clay in Germany, and lift this trophy for the first time.
World no.2 Iga Swiatek has won the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix two times out of three. With both those title-winning victories coming against Sabalenka. Swiatek is the bookies’ 6/4 (2.5) favourite this week.
If you’re looking for chinks in the armour - and we are - then remember what I said recently: Swiatek hasn’t won a title since the French Open last June. Losing three semi finals and two quarter finals so far this season.
While with Sabalenka, we can query the move from North American hard courts to the indoor clay-court set-up here in Stuttgart. Along with the fact that the no.1 hasn’t yet actually managed to get her hands on the winner’s trophy here.
Let’s take a dip with a 100/1 outsider in Swiatek’s side of the draw…
DAYANA YASTREMSKA came through qualifying over the weekend. With a pair of straight-sets, 2-0 wins suggesting that the 24-year-old Ukrainian is feeling good on these Stuttgart clay courts…
World no.46 Yastremska is a former Ones to Watch teenager, and we’ve been monitoring her comeback since a big slump and several off-court issues and injuries, post-Covid. Last year’s triple-figure-odds run to the Australian Open semi finals showed how dangerous she can be….
As with tomorrow’s 1st round opponent, Jelena Ostapenko (who is priced at 28/1 this week), Dayana is very much a ‘hit or miss’ player - capable of wiping the floor with anyone and putting together a blazing hot streak (and she’s beaten Swiatek before). But also throwing in the odd absolute stinker.
Ostapenko is actually 5-0 in the career head-to-head v Swiatek, which will be an interesting mental challenge for the Polish star should they meet this week. The Latvian has had Iga’s number so far - but these two French Open champs have never played each other on clay.
Yastremska & Ostapenko are actually playing Doubles together here in Stuttgart this week, due on court this afternoon. In Singles, the head-to-head against each other is level at 1-1. And again, these two have also yet to meet on clay.
With the younger playing coming in with that weekend qualifying form under her belt at this venue, and with price very much on Yastremka’s side, too. We’ll take the generally available 100/1 for a big Ones to Watch underdog selection here, ticking the boxes for our self-styled criteria:
We back appealing outsiders, at attractive Each Way prices…
