  • Steve Johnson back in form…

  • Bottom half the most winnable…

One to Watch – Steve Johnson back in form…

Before this season, Steve Johnson had two ATP title wins to his name. By July this year he’d doubled his career trophy tally, with two wins in the States…

Back in April, Steve was an 18/1 winner for us in Houston – an emotional victory marking almost exactly a year since his father had suddenly passed away.

Last month Johnson pulled off another tournament win on home soil, this time lifting the ATP Newport trophy on grass (he was 9/1 that week).

Overall, each of Johnson’s last three ATP finals have been reached in the USA, providing three of his four career title wins.

20/1 for Washington this week…

Event: ATP Washington, USA
Surface: Hard

This week Johnson is the 11th seed in Washington. Steve has shown form here before, reaching the semi finals in both 2015 and 2016.

The top half of the Washington draw is home to tournament favourite Alexander Zverev (4/1) as well as high quality players such as Kei Nishikori (14/1), Nick Kyrgios (14/1) and David Goffin (16/1). As well as talented and exciting youngsters Denis Shapovalov (22/1) and Stefanos Tsitsipas (28/1).

The bottom half looks winnable for Steve with a respected but less formidable set of potential opponents to navigate…

Hyeon Chung (16/1) is another youngster I like but is finding his way back to full form after injury, likewise Andrey Rublev (40/1). Andy Murray (7/1) and Kyle Edmund (16/1) play each other tonight so one of them will be knocked out. Lucas Pouille (33/1) remains as erratic as ever and hasn’t shown much all summer.

John Isner (8/1) is the 2nd seed and top American here, and made three Washington finals in 10 years – but unlike Atlanta where Isner collected his fifth title last weekend, he is yet to win the trophy in Washington. After that Atlanta run and an epic encounter in the Wimbledon semi finals, big John might be running out of steam as this week progresses.

All in all I like Steve Johnson as a 22/1 or 20/1 shot right now. After a slump in form last year, he’s back in the game in a big way this year, and there could be more success to come – especially on the North American hard courts.
