Two 28/1 shots in Haven and ‘Salem…
Monday 20th August 2018
In your Ones to Watch email today:
The three-set pendulum swung against us again last week.
In the Cincinnati men’s, 80/1 pick Grigor Dimitrov had a 6-2, 3-1 lead over Novak Djokovic – but Novak came back to win, and went on to go the whole way and win the trophy (4/1).
In the women’s event, 50/1 pick Elise Mertens made the quarter finals – but was edged out 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 by a battling-hard Petra Kvitova, in an epic match lasting 2 hours and 44 minutes. Mertens had an early break to lead 2-0 in the final set, but couldn’t hold on to it. The title was won by 80/1 Kiki Bertens, who defeated Simona Halep (6/1) in the final.
Just one week to go until the US Open now, and with a Grand Slam next on the schedule, that will be sure to have a bearing on proceedings (and player participation) this week…
Ones to Watch this week – two 28/1 shots…
Event: ATP Winston-Salem, USA
Surface: Hard
No.1 seed David Goffin has pulled out here, resting his sore shoulder to get ready for New York next week. That leaves the top half of the draw looking particularly open here, and the player I fancy to take advantage at an attractive price is 19-year-old Alex De Minaur at 28/1…
The Australian arrives here on the back of making a second ATP final of his fledgling career, in Washington as a 100/1 outsider last time out. The other also came this year, also on hard courts, as a 33/1 shot in Sydney.
De Minaur is climbing fast up the rankings. He’s currently up to No.43 – which is a career high, having steadily worked his way through the top 100 in this his breakout season on the tour.

Event: WTA New Haven, USA
Surface: Hard
In this week’s women’s event, I’ll be very surprised if at least one or two of last week’s finalists & semi finalists don’t withdraw or come a cropper early on…
Simona Halep (4/1) has just made back to back finals… Petra Kvitova (6/1) had four matches last week and three went to a final set, and she’s been struggling a little with the heat… and Cincinnati winner Kiki Bertens (20/1) would be following a familiar pattern if she was to pull out here after a tournament win last week. Halep and Kvitova are among the US Open favourites. It’s common practise for the big names to take a week off the tour prior to a Grand Slam.
Halep is in the top half of the New Haven draw as it stands, where Karolina Pliskova (10/1) and Julia Goerges (14/1) would be the prime candidates to take advantage.
For bigger prices, in the bottom half of the draw, where Kvitova and Bertens currently reside, the player that stands out most for me at outsider prices is Anett Kontaveit at 28/1…
The 22-year-old Estonian is on our Ones to Watch in 2018 list and has shown several flashes of her ability to blow opponents off the court with her big hitting this season – including knocking Kvitova out of the French Open. Kontaveit made three WTA finals last season – winning one – and this week looks a good opportunity for her to make her first final of 2018.
