Two big ones for Winston-Salem…
The week before a Grand Slam is usually good for a few fun & games. Big names withdraw or sit it out completely, preparing for the bigger event to come. Younger players and unheralded tour regulars get the chance to grab some minor but still-significant silverware.
We’re one week away from the US Open in New York. That’s our main business coming up.
The two final hard court build-up tournaments take place this week though – and two early prices catch the eye today. The first batch of 1st Round matches get underway this evening.
The women’s tour is in New York already, with the return of the WTA Bronx Open for the first time in seven years. The men are in North Carolina for the annual ATP Winston-Salem event…
This week’s picks – at 33/1 and 50/1…
Two Serbians standout at chunky Each Way prices. Filip Krajinovic is No.50 in the world and is just the kind of player that could sneak in a good week and a surprise result here…
The 27-year-old is yet to win an ATP title, but has made two finals before – the Paris Masters 2017 (indoor hard court) as a 300/1 rank outsider and Budapest this year (clay) as a 40/1 shot.
Krajinovic is 33/1 this week and as the 8th seed with a Bye through to the 2nd Round, his section of the draw doesn’t look too imposing.
Clay has been his most successful surface. But this year alone Filip has beaten the likes of Stan Wawrinka (former US Open champion), Daniil Medvedev (just reached third ATP hard court final in a row) and David Goffin (Cincinnati finalist this week) – all on hard courts.
Fellow Serbian, Miomir Kecmanovic is new on the scene. At 19 years of age, he’s up to a career-high No.58 in the rankings, having reached a first ATP final this year when finishing a 20/1 runner-up in Antalya on grass…
Like Krajinovic, Kecmanovic stands 6’0”+ and has the game to deliver with power on the hard courts. He won four matches at Cincinnati last week, coming through qualifying and into the main draw, where he beat World No.6 Alexander Zverev and highly-rated fellow teenager Felix Auger-Aliassime. That’s a nice bit of form to take into Winston-Salem this week.
Miomir is a young man on the way up at the moment. Bet365 make him as big as 50/1 here. Other firms are much shorter at 14/1.
