The Quarter Final Club: Palermo Edition...
Friday 7th August 2020
In your Ones to Watch email today:
On the right track…
We were on the right track with the ‘win from behind’ angle yesterday.
Three of the four matches at WTA Palermo went to three sets, with all three seeing the eventual winner come back from a set down…
Unfortunately for my 8/1 pick on Kaja Juvan to do that against Giorgi, it went the other way. The Slovenian teenager won the opening set. And Giorgi came back to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Palermo quarter finals today…
On to our main business, in the Outright Winner market, and we’re in familiar territory in the first week back on tour…
The return of our self-styled Sunday Night Club saw us back two women at Each Way prices this week.
Five days later, and we reach the quarter final stage at WTA Palermo, with both players still in the hat.
So far this season, a very healthy 50% of our Ones to Watch Outright Winner picks have now made the quarter finals or better. That means we’re getting plenty of chances to land the ultimate goal: the big winner.
The latest instalment of the ‘Quarter Final Club’ sees us with Anett Kontaveit and Fiona Ferro on our side and into the last eight in Italy…
Our players are now just behind two of the pre-tournament favourites in the betting, top seed Petra Martic, and Dayana Yastremska. Those two are both now around 3/1, from 6/1 and 8/1 at the start of the week.
Kontaveit and Ferro take on two players who were right at the bottom of the Outright Winner prices at the start of the week…
Italian teenager Elisabetta Cocciaretto was as big as 100/1 and 80/1 ahead of the 1st round. This has proved to be a breakthrough week for the 19-year-old, reaching her first WTA quarter final.
Fellow Italian, 33-year-old Sara Errani, was 66/1 & 50/1 when entered into the Palermo draw as a wildcard. Those two home players are now 20/1 and 28/1 respectively to go all the way this week.
In today’s quarter final match prices, the bookies make our two picks strong favourites to get past the Italians and reach the semi finals:
Kontaveit is 4/11 (1.36) to beat Cocciaretto.
Ferro is 1/4 (1.25) to beat Errani.
We have price on our side. We have chances. That’s a good position to be in, especially in the very first tournament back after a five-month delay.
Next week we have two women’s events to look forward to, WTA Prague and WTA Lexington. They start on Monday. We’ll be taking a first swipe at the Outright Winner prices on Sunday night.
Enjoy the tennis…
Best wishes,
Tom Wilson
