Our plan for the US Open...
Friday 28th August 2020
In your Ones to Watch email today:
Tsitsipas in the semi finals today…
We didn’t get a 100/1 shot through to the semi finals this week. But after reaching a couple of significant quarter finals this year, I reckon Ons Jabeur in particular will feature in our Ones to Watch selections again in tournaments to come.
In this week’s men’s event at the Western & Southern Open in New York, our sole selection was Stefanos Tsitsipas (8/1). The 22-year-old is through to the semi finals, and looks in good shape. As I said earlier in the week: he looks sharp, fit, and focused.
After already facing Kevin Anderson (6’8”), John Isner (6’10”), and Reilly Opelka (6’11”). Tsitsipas takes on yet another tall, ace-serving opponent today. The 6’5” Canadian, Milos Raonic.
The bookies make our man Stefanos a 4/7 (1.57) favourite to make it through to the final.
It’s been a decent week of New York preparation, with the US Open to come next week, at the same Flushing Meadows venue…
Our plan for the US Open…
The US Open starts on Monday. As a Ones to Watch member, you get all of this:
The draws have been made. I’ll be studying them over the weekend, along with the 1st round matches & markets.
Play will start from 4pm on Bank Holiday Monday, UK time.
Go big in the Big Apple…
In recent years, the US Open has been the scene of debut Grand Slam finals and trophies for Bianca Andreescu (2019), Naomi Osaka (2018), Sloane Stephens (2017), and Karolina Pliskova (2016). Not to mention the 200/1 v 500/1 final between Flavia Pennetta and Roberta Vinci in 2015…
And that’s just the women’s event. From that little lot, we had a 40/1 winner on Stephens, and 33/1 runner-up Pliskova.
With Wimbledon cancelled this summer, and the French Open moved to the end of September. This will be the first Grand Slam for us to enjoy since the Australian Open in January. And that Melbourne fortnight was a fantastic one for us, with 50/1 Ones to Watch pick Sofia Kenin going all the way and lifting her maiden Grand Slam trophy.
We’ll be going for prices like that once again…
With some players not travelling to New York this time (for example, in the men’s, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal won’t be there).
And the whole event played behind closed doors with no fans.
Plus, a new playing surface installed for 2020 on this Flushing Meadows courts.
There could be even more scope than usual for finding an outsider to go deep in the draw at a big, Each Way price.
The stage is set for a fascinating fortnight in New York. I’m looking forward to getting started.
Lookout for your first US Open daily email on Monday at 10am...
Enjoy the tennis…
Best wishes,
Tom Wilson
