Chasing the American dream at 40/1...
Monday 2nd August 2021
In Ones to Watch today:
It feels like Frances Tiafoe has been around a long time. He first featured in our Ones to Watch reports a few years ago now. But the American is still only 23 years old. And he’s having a good summer…
The grass season went very well for Frances, with a title win at the ATP Challenger event in Nottingham. Followed by a quarter final performance at Queen’s. And then a career-best win over Top 5 star, Stefanos Tsitsipas in the 1st round at Wimbledon.
Back in the USA now, and back on hard courts – his most winningest surface – Tiafoe is one to watch in the weeks ahead as the men’s tour takes up residency in the United States, in preparation for the US Open which kicks off at the end of the month.
Ones to Watch this week – at 25/1 and 40/1…
The biggest name in the ATP Washington draw this week is Rafael Nadal. The current world no.3 is top seed, and in the top half of the draw. In the Outright Winner betting, Rafa is around 6/4 (2.5) in general for the trophy, with BetVictor an industry-best 2/1 (3.0).
In the opposite side of the Washington draw, we could make a case for several players. Ones to Watch youngsters Jannik Sinner (10/1) and Sebastian Korda (14/1) could meet in the early rounds. That’s a factor that puts me off covering those two, as the prices are not spectacular.
Two men that I do like here are our big-serving, North American hard-court pick from last time out in Atlanta, Reilly Opelka. He was 16/1 at that ATP 250-grade event last week. With a bigger ATP 500 trophy on the line here in Washington, we can get 25/1. And to go alongside Opelka, another American, Tiafoe…
Odds of 45/1 and 40/1 stand out for Frances here. His one career ATP title to date came on outdoor hard courts in the States, at Delray Beach. This guy loves to play fired up and with the crowd behind him. These prices look to be underestimating his chances of making a run here in the capital.
