Ones to Watch in Cincinnati - at 33/1 and 50/1...
Monday 16th August 2021
In Ones to Watch today:
ATP & WTA 1000 Cincinnati – play starts 4pm…
Outsiders picks at 33/1 and 50/1…
Plus - a 100/1 shot for the US Open...
We were right to go hunting at the ‘long-shot’ end of the spectrum last week. Our 80/1 pick Sara Sorribes Tormo got as far as the quarter finals at the WTA 1000 event in Montreal. The title was won by 100/1 outsider Camila Giorgi - the Italian collecting the biggest trophy of her career, in fine style.
Well done to Ones to Watch member Ellis, who was on Giorgi at 100/1. Great work!
At the men’s tournament in Canada, our recent two-time tournament pick Reilly Opelka took full advantage of Rafa Nadal dropping out of the draw during the week (injury). Opelka went all the way to the final, finishing runner-up to the favourite, Daniil Medvedev. At the start of the week, Opelka had been at triple-figure prices in the Outright Winner betting.
We have another big ATP & WTA ‘Masters’ 1000 title to shoot at this week. As the US Open in New York edges ever closer, the men & women are in Cincinnati for the Western & Southern Open...
One man to get in the book here is our 100/1+ semi-finalist from Wimbledon, Hubert Hurkacz. The affable Pole came closer than anyone to beating Medvedev last week, losing the last two sets by the narrowest of margins, 7-6, 7-6 (quarter finals). At Wimbledon, Hubi beat the Russian. They could meet again in Cincinnati this week.
At odds of 33/1, Hurkacz is a man to follow. He’s already won an ATP 1000 title on North American hard courts this season, at Miami. In comparison, Medvedev is just 3/1 (4.0) and 10/3 (4.33) to win back-to-back titles, after taking the honours in Canada on Sunday evening.

Now is also the time to take standout odds of 100/1 and 80/1 for Hurkacz to win the US Open. We’ve already seen this summer that Hubi can raise his game and deliver on the Grand Slam stage. In recent years, players triumphing at the usual (pre-COVID) March events in Indian Wells & Miami have gone on to win big in New York. Notably Naomi Osaka in the women’s, and Dominic Thiem in the men’s.

In the WTA Cincinnati field this week, as ever right now in the women’s game, there are any number of outsiders that could spring a surprise at tasty odds…
One I’ll get in the book from day one is French Open runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who is having a very good season. The world no.17 is vastly experienced, and with increased confidence in her game, and playing with a smile on her face in 2021, the Russian can take advantage if a big name like Osaka, the 9/2 (5.5) favourite, fails to deliver again. Odds of 50/1 appeal, with that Each Way price available pretty much across the board.
