The wrong left-hander...
Friday 12th August 2022
It turns out we were on the wrong left-hander yesterday…
While my 50/1 Toronto outsider Jil Belen Teichmann was beaten in straight sets by Simona Halep. Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia produced the upset of the day at 5/1, knocking out world no.1 and title favourite, Iga Swiatek.
As with Teichmann, Haddad Maia is also a lefty with underdog credentials on the women’s tour, and currently riding a career-high ranking. The 26-year-old Brazilian is up to no.24, and I have to say I was impressed by her competitive level against Swiatek last night.
Drenched in sweat…
Thursday’s tennis was nothing if not dramatic. I was already sweating with the heat – and was even more hot and bothered as the day’s play panned out over in Canada.
We lost Cameron Norrie from our Outright Winner book, with the Brit not looking himself (possibly blisters on his racket hand). But we have two picks still standing – just about – and through to the quarter finals…
At ATP Montreal, our 33/1 – 25/1 Each Way pick Hubert Hurkacz saved a match point yesterday. He’ll go off as the underdog against man-of-the-moment Nick Kyrgios (5pm+, UK time). Although Hubi did come out on top in their only previous meeting, beating Nick 2-1 on grass at Halle in June. The bookies now make Hurkacz 7/1 at best for the title – with Kyrgios the favourite for the trophy at a best-price 6/4 (2.5) with Betfred.
At WTA Toronto, we have Jessica Pegula at 50/1 – 33/1 Each Way. Jess also had to save a match point to come through last night. But in the end, she finished strong, and that should give her a confidence boost. Pegula is now 4/1 for the trophy. The American is priced as the favourite to beat Yulia Putintseva this evening (7.30pm+). This will be their first meeting.
Two positive stats for our players going into today’s quarter finals in Canada:
Cincinnati next week…
Next week the high-grade 1000 events continue, with both the ATP & WTA Tours setting up camp in Cincinnati, USA. I’ll be in touch at the start of the week with my tournament picks.
Enjoy the tennis…
Best wishes,
Tom Wilson
