Ones to Watch for WTA Cincinnati...
Monday 15th August 2022
We continue to knock, knock, knock on the door…
Our 33/1 pick Hubert Hurkacz made the ATP Montreal final last week. But once again we had to make do with an Each Way place payout for the runner-up.
After taking the first set in Sunday’s final, Hurkacz was eventually beaten by first-time ATP 1000 Masters champion, Pablo Carreno-Busta.
That takes us to eight out of nine Ones to Watch finalists that have lost in the final this season. Each Way half-the-odds payouts are great - especially from the Outright Winner prices that we go for. But the big, full-odds win is of course what we’re ultimately after.
Ones to Watch this week…
This week the tours move on to Cincinnati for the Western & Southern Open, another significant ATP & WTA 1000-grade event on the road to the US Open.
As I write the bookies are yet to have their tournament markets up for the men’s Cincinnati event. But the women’s prices are up - and that’s the list I was looking for…
Our Ones to Watch picks don’t exist in isolation from week to week, and oftentimes a player that’s bombed one week can spring into form the next. For example, Hurkacz fell at the first hurdle in Washington this month - then went on to reach the Montreal final the week after.
In Toronto last time out our picks included AMANDA ANISIMOVA, JESSICA PEGULA, and JIL BELEN TEICHMANN. I want to follow that trio again here at WTA Cincinnati.
Anisimova continues to show glimpses of what she’s capable of, and with the young American already in the book for us for the US Open (33/1), we should continue to back her at similar prices in the build-up to New York. In that respect, this week’s 1000-grade event will likely be the last chance to do so, before the Big Apple looms at the end of the month.
Pegula remains a dangerous contender on hard courts; while not quite landing the big prize yet, she’s getting close often enough for me to keep her on the list at 20/1+. Pegula made the semi finals in Toronto last week.
Teichmann is the big-odds long-shot selection here. She made the final here last season. As a 100/1+ outsider, as I’ve said before, Jil is the kind of player that can put a run together out of nowhere.
One other player to keep an eye on here in Cincinnati is last week’s beaten Toronto finalist, BEATRIZ HADDAD MAIA. The Brazilian is having the season of her life - now up to a new career high of no.16 in today’s updated WTA world rankings. At all levels, the 26-year-old has made five finals from nine tournaments since the start of May. Very impressive stuff, and a formline that we shouldn’t ignore.
It would be easy to write Haddad Maia off this week, as players often drop off (or pull out) in the tournament directly after they’ve reached a final. But Beatriz has shown great fitness levels and plenty of drive and determination this year. Indeed, on the two other occasions where she’s made a final, she’s gone on to reach another final the very next week. Odds of 33/1+ appeal.
