14/1 Putintseva falls in the quarter finals...

Long-time followers will know that my Ones to Watch picks are often a case of ‘good things come to those who wait’...

While it would have been nice to start the first week of our new members-only Tour coverage with an Each Way tournament finalist, it wasn’t to be. And shaking off my grumpy 5am start watching 14/1 pick Yulia Putintseva lose in the WTA Taipei quarter finals this morning – I’m back to my usual positive-minded self now (and it’s not even lunchtime yet).

Last Sunday, we were only one set away from Marin Cilic winning the Australian Open at 30/1 or 28/1.

And we started January with 22/1 Katerina Siniakova making the WTA Shenzhen final.

One winning payout on a player & price like that and our 2018 season will be bang up-and-firing and in profit...

ATP tournaments for us next week...

I’ll be looking at the Outright Winner opportunities for us next week with the Men’s tour returning for the first time since Australia, with three events on the Calendar:

  • ATP Sofia – Bulgaria – indoor hard
  • ATP Montpellier – France – indoor hard
  • ATP Quito – Ecuador – clay

I’ll be in touch on Sunday night with your next Ones to Watch members-only email, allowing us to target the draws for those three tournaments and pick out any Outright Winner value before the opening matches are played.

With plenty of action scheduled, we are also likely to be betting in the Match Winner markets next week. Total Games, Sets and Handicaps are all in my thoughts, too.

Three-time hero starts the Golden Swing...

Next week’s schedule includes the ATP Quito event in Ecuador. This was the scene of a 12/1 winner for us last year when the veteran Victor Estrella Burgos took the Quito title – for the third year in a row. And seeing as this tournament has only been going for three years, he’s the only man to have ever won it.

Estrella Burgos is 37 years of age now, and is set to return next week for a fourth crack at the trophy.

ATP Quito is the first clay court event of the year, and marks the start of the clay season and the opening stop on the so-called ‘Golden Swing’ of clay tournaments in South America.

We’ll take a look at the prices on Sunday night.

One for the conspiracy theorists...

And finally...

Don’t be surprised if you see our old friend Eugenie Bouchard popping up on the internet over the weekend...

Back in 2014, Bouchard was a 50/1 ‘One to Watch’ pick for Wimbledon, where she finished runner-up. Her form is yet to hit those heights again.

I had actually been impressed with the Canadian so far this week in Taipei, playing better than I’ve seen her for some time when beating Ana Bogdan on Thursday morning (and Bogdan had previously knocked out our 12/1 pick Shuai Peng this week).

However, Bouchard suffered a 6-4, 6-0 defeat to Yafan Wang in the quarter finals this morning – and that 6-0 score-line in the second set might get a few tongues wagging. Especially if Bouchard ends up making it to the States in time to attend the Super Bowl this weekend...

Bouchard won just 10 points in that second set. She has now lost 7 of her last 10 matches. However, Eugenie does have a new coach for 2018, so let’s see if the faint signs of a comeback this week were anything more than that.

Enjoy the tennis. I’ll be back with you on Sunday night...

Best wishes,

Oliver Upstone
