Tournament update – Herbert in the quarters…

Friday 8th February 2019

In your Ones to Watch email today:

  • ATP Montpellier…
  • 25/1 Herbert now 10/1…
  • Quarter Finals today…

The Top Seeds are out…

There are three ATP events taking place this week. In all three tournaments, the No.1 seeded player was knocked out in their very first match. Proving once again that backing the favourites is not the way to bet on tennis…

In Sofia, top seed and 5/1 (6.00) pre-tournament Outright Winner favourite Karen Khachanov had a Bye through to the 2nd Round. That’s as far as he got.

It was the same in Cordoba in the first clay court tournament of the season, with 7/2 (4.50) favourite and No.1 seed Fabio Fognini also coming a cropper in the 2nd Round, having been granted a free pass through the 1st Round.

And in Montpellier, reigning champion, 2019 top seed and 5/1 favourite Lucas Pouille also crashed in round two after receiving a Bye in the 1st Round.

25/1 Herbert in the quarters…

In Ones to Watch, we tend to go for much bigger prices. We won’t get the winner or the finalist every week – but we give ourselves plenty of chances…

This week we have one man left standing from our four original picks. Pierre-Hugues Herbert is through to the quarter finals in Montpellier. The bookies make him a slight underdog to beat the exciting youngster Denis Shapovalov this afternoon (2.30pm, live on Amazon Prime Video).

We got on Herbert at best prices of 25/1 or 20/1 Each Way. He’s now down to 10/1. The Frenchman has proved our most productive pick this week. Getting players into quarter finals (and beyond) on a regular basis gives us plenty of chances to edge towards landing a few big ones over the course of the season.

I’ll be back on Sunday night with a first look at next week’s Outright Winner prices and outsider opportunities. There are four tournaments on the schedule, including the first ATP 500 level event of the year, in Rotterdam.

Enjoy the tennis…

Best wishes,
