New York update – Querrey in the quarters…
We’ve got one player left standing this week, with Sam Querrey through to the ATP New York quarter finals…
Sam played really well last night, serving very well and also hitting his groundstrokes with some real gusto. He beat Radu Albot, 6-3, 6-4.
These black indoor hard courts seem to suit Sam. The bookies now make him a favourite to reach the final for a second year running.
With pre-tournament second-favourite Frances Tiafoe knocked out by Jason Jung last night (who at 9/2 – 5.50 – was the same price to win that match as Tiafoe was to win the whole tournament), Querrey is now 11/4 (3.75) at best for the title. We’re on at 9/1 (10.00) Each Way, so while this isn’t on one of our big ones, we’re certainly in a good position as it stands.
The three players left in Sam’s side of the draw are all ranked outside the Top 100 (our man is No.49). World No.143 Jung is tonight’s opponent. With the winner of that quarter final to play either Paolo Lorenzi (#111) or Brayden Schnur (#154).
If Sam can continue the form he’s been in so far, with his serve in particular proving a real weapon, then he’s a rightful favourite to keep his run going this week.
I’ll be back on Sunday night with a first look at next week’s tournaments and Outright Winner prices. There are five events on the schedule.
Enjoy the tennis…
Best wishes,
Tom Wilson
