Back Sam in the States at 9/1...

In your Ones to Watch email today:
New York, New York...
I said the New York Open courts were likely to play fast, and with the 1st Round completed that looks to be the case.
With plenty of big servers and USA players in the draw, the black courts at Long Island’s Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum appear to cater to the likes of top seed John Isner, and fellow 6’6”+ American serving giants Reilly Opelka and Sam Querrey.
Our initial New York pick Tennys Sandgren (top price 40/1) was on the end of a narrow defeat in the opening round. Breaks of serve were at a premium in a grinding 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 loss to Paolo Lorenzi. The match took over two and half hours, featured two tiebreaks, just one lost service game – and a total of 30 Aces.
That match genuinely could have gone either way, which was also the case for our ATP Buenos Aires pick Nicolas Jarry (25/1) who missed out in a final set, too.
A rollercoaster match went our way in the WTA Doha event though, with Kiki Bertens (16/1) recovering from losing the first set 0-6, then hanging on in the second set tiebreak before eventually winning 0-6, 7-6, 6-4. After the match Bertens said she’d been under the weather recently, but was now starting to feel a lot better. She’s a 2/5 (1.40) favourite to beat Carla Suarez Navarro in the 2nd Round this afternoon.
Querrey 9/1 for another run...
Back to this week’s ATP New York tournament and there’s one more player I want to be on this week...
Sam Querrey got to the final in the inaugural New York Open last year, as a 6/1 shot. Big Sam started this week’s Big Apple campaign with a 7-6, 6-2 win over South Africa’s Lloyd Harris last night. The 6’6” American served 13 Aces, got a high 73% of 1st Serves in – and won 78% of 1st Serve Points.
After a slow start to the season, Sam can get his year going with another deep run in this American event...
Seven of Querrey’s 10 career ATP titles have been in the USA. Along with five out of eight runner-up appearances, that makes a total of 12 out of 18 finals in the States.
With these indoor hard courts suiting Sam’s big-serving game, at 9/1 he’s my pick to come through the bottom side of the remaining New York Open draw...
The 6’10” top seed John Isner is in the top half and just 3/1 for the trophy.
A key point for Querrey is that he has a significant winning record against some of the main contenders on his side of the draw-sheet. Sam has a 2-0 career record v 4/1 second-favourite France Tiafoe, 3-0 v another of the Americans, Steve Johnson (7/1) and 6-3 v the 39-year-old 6’11” Ivo Karlovic (18/1 in general).
Sam started the week at 10/1 at best, so at 9/1 we’re still getting near-on that price today, and with the extra knowledge that he’s in decent shape after coming through his 1st Round match in straight sets.
