The return of our Sunday Night Club…
I went out on my bicycle this morning. The sun was out. Dare I say it – it feels like the first scent of Spring is in the air…
With the Australian Open now in the rear-view mirror, it feels like we’re starting a new tennis season all over again.
WTA Adelaide wraps up the tour’s month-long stay Down Under this week.
Next week, we’re off to Argentina, Qatar, France, and the Netherlands…
With four tournaments all starting on Monday, 1st March:
ATP 250 – Buenos Aires – clay
ATP 500 – Rotterdam – indoor hard
WTA 250 – Lyon – indoor hard
WTA 500 – Doha – hard
The 2020 instalments of those tournaments produced two finalists at odds of 28/1, along with 66/1 and 100/1 runners-up.
Those are the kinds of prices I’ll be concentrating on, as is always the case, with my Ones to Watch selections.
We shall be taking a first foray into the Outright Winner markets on Sunday evening. Long-time readers will know that we call this our ‘Sunday Night Club’…
The tournament draws will be made over the weekend. Sunday night gives us the chance to swoop in early, have a look at who might play who. And most importantly of all – which players could put a run together at an attractive Each Way price.
2-1 to the Tennis Gods…
I don’t know if you managed to watch Anastasija Sevastova v Jil Teichmann on Wednesday night – but it was a real heartbreaker…
A close match had been anticipated. Sevastova to win 2-1 at 4/1 was the biggest of the four options available in the Set Betting market. The Latvian had two match points to land that bet, but it wasn’t to be. You can’t get much closer, and not win.
Having said that, in the second set, Sevastova saved no fewer than five match points. So, it could’ve all been over in two sets...
Instead, the match went to a whopping three hours. The scoreboard continued to twist and turn. Our player went 3-0 ahead in the final set. Teichmann eventually rolled it over, to win 6-4, 6-7, 7-5.
In terms of match points going against or for us, I make that 2-1 to the tennis gods so far in 2021…
On top of Sevastova this week. At the Australian Open, 50/1 Ones to Watch pick Kaia Kanepi had match point in the 3rd round v Donna Vekic, but couldn’t take it, and went on to lose.
But, at the WTA Phillip Island Trophy, Marie Bouzkova saved two match points, and came from 0-3 down in the deciding set, to beat the favourite Bianca Andreescu. In doing so, 33/1 shot Bouzkova reached the Phillip Island final, to ensure an Each Way payout.
These things tend to even out in the long run. The tennis scoring system can drive you mad one day – and have you jumping out of your chair the next. It’s all part of the game we love.
I’ll see you on Sunday evening. I can’t put an exact time on it, as I need the bookies to price up their Outright markets first. But I aim to have the Sunday Night Club email with you by 9pm at the latest.
Enjoy the tennis…
Best wishes,
Tom Wilson
