WTA Monterrey – a Colombian fighter at 28/1...
Monday 28th February 2022
We had a satisfying underdog result in Acapulco last week, with 33/1 Each Way pick Cameron Norrie reaching the final and finishing runner-up, for a half-the-odds payout.
We’re in Mexico again this evening, this time for the WTA Monterrey event. This women’s 250-grade tournament is played on outdoor hard courts…
The last two instalments have seen 28/1 and 18/1 shots get to the final. I’ve got a willing underdog on the list today, with Maria Camila Osorio Serrano the one I like as a 28/1 outsider.
Age 20, Osorio Serrano has been on my radar for the past year or so. The young Colombian is up to a career high of no.44 in the world right now, on the back of a quarter-final run at Guadalajara last week (also in Mexico).
Last season, Maria Camila won her maiden WTA title, lifting the trophy on clay in Bogota, Colombia, priced at 25/1. As with Monterrey this week, Bogota was also a 250-grade field, a tier that looks just right for targeting this feisty newcomer.
Osorio Serrano has several qualities that I like. She’s passionate on court, and crucially, seems to be able to channel that into positive energy more times than not. The 20-year-old has a will-to-win aggression that can’t be taught, and that tenacity has already seen her through several long three-set battles in her young career.
One such go-the-distance contest came against Elina Svitolina on hard courts in Tenerife last October. Osorio Serrano was a 7/1 underdog in that meeting, and came from a set down to beat the former world no.3, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, in a match that spanned two days due to fading light.
Svitolina, the current no.15, is top seed in Monterrey this week. The Ukrainian won this trophy on her last visit in 2020, franking 3/1 favouritism in the Outright Winner market. Elina is 5/1 at best to take the crown again this week, but I’m on record as saying I find the 27-year-old hard to trust at short prices. Svitolina went out in the 1st round at Doha last week. Her last two matches on tour have ended in defeat to lower-ranked players. It's also fair to say that Svitolina might have her head elsewhere this week, with the upsetting situation back home in Ukraine.
Those two are in the same half of the Monterrey draw, seeded to meet in the quarter finals. As a 28/1+ outsider, Osorio Serrano is my One to Watch.
