Brisbane update – Medvedev beats Murray...
Wednesday 2nd January 2019
In your Ones to Watch email today:
Two picks into the quarters...
Wednesday’s Brisbane results went about as well as we could have hoped for.
Our two Ones to Watch picks for this week both booked their places in the quarter finals.
And top seed Rafael Nadal has pulled out injured, removing a major hurdle from the paths of both our players...
Daniil Medvedev beat the returning-from-injury Andy Murray, 7-5, 6-2 with a nice performance including some dominant serving. Medvedev’s pre-tournament 14/1 (15.00) price is now down to 11/2 (6.50).
Our 19-year-old Australian, Alex De Minaur has won both his matches in straight sets, 2-0, with a couple of assured performances against two fellow Aussie players. He beat Alexei Popyrin 6-2, 6-2 in double-quick fashion, and followed it up with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Jordan Thompson. De Minaur’s 18/1 (19.00) Outright Winner price has now been trimmed to 7/1 (8.00) at best.
The quarter finals start in the early hours of Friday morning, UK time...
Medvedev faces former ATP Brisbane champion Milos Raonic. Our man won their only previous meeting, en route to the Tokyo title in October, 7-6, 6-3, in a match that featured just one break of serve. Expect serve to play a big part in Friday’s quarter final match, too.
De Minaur will face the winner of Taro Daniel (who replaces Nadal in the draw, as a Lucky Loser) and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (also recently back from injury).
Last season we got over 40 players into quarter finals or better. In week one of 2019 we’ve got two picks into the quarters, with a couple of nice prices on our side.
Let’s see how things pan out in Brisbane over the next few days. I’ll be touch again soon.
Enjoy the tennis...
Best wishes,
Tom Wilson
