Two quarter finals in the morning…

Wednesday 15th January 2020

In your Ones to Watch email today:

  • Hurkacz serving well in Auckland…
  • Kudermetova beats Bellis…
  • Next stop, Melbourne…

Two quarter finals in the morning…

We had four tournament picks this week.

We’ve got two still standing and through to the quarter finals.

That’s a ratio I’d take all season.

The more picks we get making it to quarter finals and beyond, the more opportunities we’ll have to land some decent odds.

Hurkacz serving well in Auckland…

At ATP Auckland, Hubert Hurkacz (9/1) beat Mikael Ymer last night, 6-2, 7-6. The 6’5” Pole is yet to drop a set this week, winning both matches in straight sets and saving a total of six out of six break points.

Hurkacz will face the veteran Feliciano Lopez in the quarters – scheduled for 7.30am Thursday, UK time.

Lopez has a mean lefty serve and is never an easy opponent. But the bookies are firmly in favour of the younger man here, with the 22-year-old Hurkacz priced at 1/3 (1.33) to take care of his 38-year-old Spanish opponent.

In the Outright market, our man is now a general 4/1 to go all the way.

Kudermetova beats Bellis…

On the women’s tour, we’re on Veronika Kudermetova (16/1) for WTA Hobart.

The Russian delivered on our 2-0 Set Betting pick last night, beating Catherine Bellis in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1.

Kudermetova served a high 12 aces in that match, and won a very solid 70% of 1st Serve points.

  • For anyone following the Set ‘Correct Score’ markets, the 6-1 score in the 2nd Set was a 9/1 chance

Next stop for the 22-year-old is a quarter final on Thursday morning against former World No.1, Garbine Muguruza.

Muguruza was pushed all the way in round two, having to come from a set down to beat Ons Jabeur, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 in a final-set tiebreak.

The bookies have the Spaniard as the favourite in this one, but not by much. Muguruza is 8/11 (1.73). Kudermetova is 11/10 (2.10).

In the Outright betting, our 16/1 pick is now 6/1 for the title.

Kudermetova v Muguruza will be on Amazon Prime Video from 7am.

Next stop, Melbourne…

We’re just a few days away from the first Grand Slam of the year.

The Australian Open starts on Sunday night.

I’ll be in touch before then with full details of what to expect from me during the Melbourne fortnight. We’ll be looking at the matches and markets, every day.

And of course – we’ll be hunting for big-price ‘Ones to Watch’ in the Outright Winner betting.

Enjoy the tennis…

Best wishes,
