Australian Open Day 8 – Kanepi v Sabalenka…

Sunday 23rd January 2022

Australian Open daily email service – Day 8

There were eight 4th round matches played on Day 7 – and all of them were settled in straight sets. That’s four x 3-0 scores in the men’s, and four x 2-0 victories in the women’s.

We lost two of our women’s Outright picks along the way. Victoria Azarenka was hampered by an injury issue. And 100/1 pre-tournament outsider Amanda Anisimova was not able to put much of a dent in the near-flawless form of the tournament favourite, Ash Barty. The Australian was simply too good.

The big shining light was Denis Shapovalov in the men’s, with our 80/1 shot shocking second-favourite Alexander Zverev – and in straight sets to boot. That result made it worth staying up all night…

For this afternoon’s email I’m keeping things short and sweet. And I’m also sticking to my guns…

Kanepi v Sabalenka

Monday approx. 10am UK time

Aryna Sabalenka is a prime contender for 2-1 Set Betting wagers. She has been for a while now.

We’ve spoken regularly about the world no.2’s hit-or-miss tennis. During week one here in Melbourne, Aryna has come from a set down to win on three out of three occasions. Gradually playing herself into some form, after a shockingly poor start to the season Down Under. Still clocking up double-figure amounts of Double Faults per match. But slowly clicking into gear, nonetheless.

Day 8 opponent Kaia Kanepi is a good fit for another three-set contest here. The 36-year-old Estonian beat Sabalenka 2-1 at this venue last year. A few days ago, I might’ve been more on the side of the veteran as the underdog, against a vulnerable-looking big name. But Sabalenka is finding a way to win when not playing her best – and that’s a very good quality to have…

To reiterate my thinking behind a 2-1 score bet like this. In women’s tennis, there are only two ways to win a match: 2-0, or 2-1. Sabalenka is the short odds-on, 4/11 (1.36) favourite to beat Kanepi. A straight-sets victory for the Belarusian is also odds-on, at 5/6 (1.83). I believe there’s value in the 2-1 option. And given all that we’ve seen from Aryna recently – and also Kaia’s propensity to play power tennis, too. The Sabalenka 2-1 score at 3/1 is my price selection here.
