Ones to Watch in Adelaide - 12/1 and 18/1 picks...

Monday 9th January 2023

Good afternoon. This time next week we’ll already be well into day one of the Australian Open

The first Grand Slam of the year kicks off on Monday 16th January, at midnight UK time. That means your day one email will be with you this Sunday, 15th January (5pm).

As you can imagine, I’m busy doing my Aussie Open prep this week. I’ll keep you posted with my notes, and any early picks, throughout the week.

  • Talking of early-bird picks, we made a good move by backing 18-year-old Linda Noskova at 150/1 or 100/1 last week. The Czech teenager reached a maiden WTA final at the Adelaide International 1 event. Noskova is now up to a new career high of no.56 in the world rankings. And now down to 33/1 for the Australian Open. The other one of our teenage picks, 17-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova, is still available at 100/1 as I write (Bet365, Boylesports…)

The Australian Open Qualifying rounds started last night - we may have a match bet or two (or an acca) in those matches. As always, I’ll keep you posted by email. And every article I send out is also uploaded to the archive on your members-only Ones to Watch website.

There are also four tournaments taking place this week:

ATP 250 - Adelaide International 2
ATP 250 - Auckland, ASB Classic
WTA 500 - Adelaide International 2
WTA 250 - Hobart International

I want to tread carefully in the week before a Major. We’ve already seen a few withdrawals. And with one eye on Melbourne next week, don’t be surprised to see a few big names go out early or pull out with precautionary ‘injury’ retirements this week.

I’m targeting one tournament today…

Ones to Watch in Adelaide…

Here are two players that standout for the women’s event in Adelaide. Both showed glimpses of good form last week, at the first of this month’s two back-to-back Adelaide International events. And both have featured in our Outright Winner betting at big prices over the past season or two…

Qinwen Zheng @ 18/1
China
Age 20
Rank #30

Twenty-year-old Qinwen Zheng is one of the current crop of youngsters threatening to break through and do something big this season. What I like is she has a strong, better-than-average serve, and a down-to-business game-face for the big occasion.

Zheng beat the higher-ranked and always-dangerous Anett Kontaveit here in Adelaide last week. And reeled off two wins to come through the latest rounds of qualifying over the weekend.

A first full-level WTA title beckons in 2023…

  • In her last 5 tournaments, Qinwen Zheng has reached a quarter final and a final. This rising star started last season ranked no.125 in the world - she could soon be knocking on the door of the Top 20, having already hit as high as no.25 last October

Veronika Kudermetova @ 12/1
Russia
Age 25
Rank #9

Veronika Kudermetova is already a Top 10 player, with two WTA singles trophies in the cabinet. More can follow this season…

Another great server, what I like about Veronika lately is that she’s added some consistency to her classic Russian hard-hitting game:

  • After a quarter final at the Adelaide 1 event last week, Kudermetova has now made the quarter finals or better at her last 4 tournaments - and in 8 of her last 11
