Our plan of action for the Australian Open...

Saturday 14th January 2023

A quick update from me this Saturday, with the Australian Open kicking off tomorrow night...

First a note on some of our recent Outright Winner business. We got a semi final from one of our first Each Way picks of the new WTA Tour season. But we didn’t get the chance to see if our player could land the Each Way odds or win the trophy…

Don’t talk about ‘bad luck’…

Veronika Kudermetova, our 12/1 pick for the WTA Adelaide International 2 event this week, made it the semis. But then withdrew before her match – citing a hip injury – granting Belinda Bencic free passage to the final.

Now, considering Kudermetova came from a set down to win both her matches to get to the semi final, including saving five match points in the quarter final. And benefitted from a walkover herself in the round before that. I suppose we can’t really bemoan ‘bad luck’ here.

After all, on Monday, I’d expressed the need to tread carefully in this week’s tournaments, coming as they do just days before the first Grand Slam of the season. With star players often known for dropping like flies the week before a Major, before returning seemingly unscathed at the main event…

That’s part of the reason we swerved the clear favourites, and went for Qinwen Zheng (30/1, 18/1) and Veronika Kudermetova (12/1, 11/1) in Adelaide. To see both women pull out during the week with (precautionary?) injury withdrawals was disappointing, to say the least.

The organisers of these tournaments will be frustrated, too…

Both of the Adelaide semi finals ended up being walkovers, after Paula Badosa withdrew from her match with Daria Kasatkina. With the Spaniard issuing a statement that basically said – reading between the lines, of course – that she doesn’t want to risk anything before the Australian Open next week. I’m assuming that anyone with Adelaide tickets got their money back on Friday, seeing as the two headline matches were both cancelled.

Anyway, we move on. And if Thursday night’s big-odds appetiser email has done its job, then like me, you’ll be looking forward to getting down to some proper, Ones to Watch, big-price betting in Melbourne next week…

Our plan of action for the Australian Open…

A reminder of our mantra. It goes without saying that I’m always looking for value prices on your behalf. And when it comes to our mainstay, the tournament Outright Winner markets, my approach will remain resolutely as it has for many years:

We go after appealing outsiders, at attractive Each Way prices.

You don’t need me to tell you that Novak Djokovic might win the Australian Open. He’s won it nine times already (!), and is the odds-on favourite at 5/6 (1.83) to make it ten.

But you might find my off-the-beaten track pointers, in-depth analysis, and notes on young players to watch… useful in your betting pursuits Down Under this coming fortnight…

We never know when the Big Ones are going to land, of course. Last January, we had 66/1 Each Way shot Danielle Collins in the Australian Open final (runner-up, 1/2 odds payout).

And at this same event in 2020, we were on the big ‘surprise’ winner, Sofia Kenin at 50/1 – having backed her several times at smaller tournaments the season before.

Also in 2020 – if you were with me then – we got on Iga Swiatek for the French Open, at massive odds of 80/1 and 100/1. Literally before anyone else was talking about her as a potential champion that year, let alone backing her. She’s now world no.1.

And away from the Majors, last season we hit on a 100/1 winner at ATP Indian Wells in March (Taylor Fritz, we love you). And we had 33/1 teenager Holger Rune winning the ATP Paris Masters at the end of the season in November (beating Djokovic in a classic final). Both were maiden ATP ‘Masters’ 1000 titles for those young men.

The point being, we’re always looking to be on the Next Big Thing, early doors – and at Big Prices, too. But there’s no crystal ball or pre-marked calendar for this…

We might strike gold in Australia this month…

We may have to wait to hit the jackpot in the thick of the season this summer…

Who knows. But what I can tell you is: I’ll be on a 2023 mission to land us in as many promising and profitable positions as possible.

I’ll see you tomorrow at 5pm, Sunday 15th January, with your day one email and Outright Winner picks for the Australian Open. And then your DAILY EMAIL SERVICE will continue by 5pm every day for the full two-week tournament.

See you tomorrow!
