Australian Open: Day 8 - drama at the double at 41/1...
Sunday 22nd January 2023
Good afternoon, and welcome to Day 8 of your Australian Open 2023 daily service. Play starts from Midnight UK time…
All to play for…
It was another 2am+ finish in Melbourne. The debate about late-night tennis matches goes on. Victoria Azarenka and Lin Zhu didn’t step out on court until 11.30pm local time.
That came after two of yesterday’s four men’s matches went to the full five sets. Including the clash between Sebastian Korda and our departing 100/1 tournament outsider Hubert Hurkacz, with Korda taking it in a final-set tiebreak. It doesn’t get much closer.
Don’t ask me what time I went to bed…
But as I always say, the late nights are worth it when the results go our way. Despite losing Hurkacz from the Outright book, we still emerged from the night with a few decent positions going for us:
Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Jannik Sinner in five sets, franking the move we made yesterday in the men’s Name the Finalists market. Our 16/1 Tsitsipas & Rune combo is now down to 9/1. Holger Rune plays tonight for a place in the quarter finals.
Jessica Pegula was rock solid and mighty impressive once again. The 28-year-old American moves into the Australian Open quarter finals for the third year running. Jessica extends her 2023 winning streak to eight straight-sets 2-0 wins in a row. The other half of our 25/1+ women’s Name the Finalists combo, Aryna Sabalenka, looks to do the same, playing tonight in the Last 16.
After world no.1 and tournament favourite Iga Swiatek was knocked out last night, along with Coco Gauff also sent packing. Our Pegula & Sabalenka Name the Finalists pick is now the 6/1 favourite in this market.
In the women’s Outright Winner betting, we have 100/1+ Each Way pick Linda Fruhvirtova looking to reach what would be a maiden Grand Slam quarter final. The sky’s the ceiling with the 17-year-old, but it’s of course still a very big ask for the teenager to strike gold in her very first Australian Open. Linda will believe she can do it, though - and that’s a take-it-to-the-bank mentality that can serve us well by backing her in many, many more tournaments to come.
I’m not writing off young Linda tonight - no way. But if the teenager’s leg injury flares up again, then her in-form opponent Donna Vekic may well justify her status as the 4/9 (1.44) favourite.
Vekic is on an eight-match winning run of her own this month, including a 2-0 win over Fruhvirtova in a pre-Aussie Open exhibition match. Read into that what you will. But one thing I know about exciting newcomers like Linda F: they’re smart. Linda will have made a few notes about Donna after that recent ‘friendly match.’
You may wish to back Vekic, and I’ll leave that up to you. I’m sticking with the highest-potential upside, and that’s in the teenager’s game. Linda is looking to make her first Grand Slam quarter final, at age 17. Vekic is 26, and has played many, many Majors - managing just one solitary QF appearance so far (US Open 2019). The Croatian did look very good in her last match though.
Moving on - and the big-odds quest continues by heading to the match markets this evening…
Here are my picks for tonight. Built on stats like this…
And formbook facts like those, mixed in with my own reading of how the current player form and tournament situations are shaping up…
