Will the French reclaim the silverware this week?
Up to 2020, the indoor hard-court Open Sud de France event in Montpellier had been dominated by home players...
With a run of eight out of 10 French champions...
And a 10-year streak of at least one Frenchman in the final every year. Including no fewer than five all-French finals.
We should get behind a talented young French player at ATP Montpellier this week, then...
One name that catches my eye as a 33/1 outsider is 21-year-old Harold Mayot.
The world no.144 is already through to the 2nd round, having beaten one of those former 'home' Montpellier champs, the injury-plagued Lucas Pouille, on Tuesday.
Mayot has started 2024 in low-key promising fashion, with a couple of semi-final showings on the lower-tier ATP Challenger circuit - most recently here in France, indoors, at the Quimper event.
And at the back-end of last season, on the full ATP Tour, young Harold impressed this viewer on his run to the quarter finals indoors again in France, at ATP Metz. Only beaten by eventual champion, and another Frenchman, Ugo Humbert.
Since the start of 2023, Mayot has won 15 out of 22 matches on indoor hard courts
That Metz 2023 form-line could prove a useful lead this week...
We were on Alexander Shevchenko at big prices that week - 50/1 & 28/1 - as he made his debut run to an ATP final.
Since then, the 23-year-old has switched national status: as of this week on the tour, world no.59 Shevchenko will be playing under the flag of Kazakhstan. He's not the first young player to make the move from Russia. He strikes me as the kind of positive-energy young man who will look to back up that news with a good run this week...
Last season, Shevchenko won 12 out of 18 matches on indoor hard courts
