Jacks v Bulldogs…

The Battle of the Brits Team Tennis event starts today at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton. The plan is to play all week on outdoor hard courts. Today’s weather doesn’t look too good, so there might be the odd rain delay.

This new event sees 26 British men & women split into two teams comprising of 13 players each, the Union Jacks and the British Bulldogs.

The Union Jacks have Andy Murray, Dan Evans and Katie Boulter in their ranks. It’s no surprise that Skybet have the Jacks as the 8/13 (1.62) favourite in the Outright Winner market.

The British Bulldogs are 6/5 (2.2) underdogs. Their star names include Kyle Edmund, Cameron Norrie and Johanna Konta.

How it works…

  • You can get a full breakdown of the Battle of the Brits Team Tennis format, scoring system and player lists & schedules on the official LTA website

Points are awarded for each match win, across Singles & Doubles. The first team to 60 pts wins the competition.

Matches are played best of three sets, with the first two sets played as normal with a tiebreak if needed. Third set deciders are played as a first to 10 points Champions Tiebreak.

Play starts on today’s day one schedule from 12 noon. The action will be live on BBC iPlayer/ Sports app/ Red Button TV throughout the week. Finals day is Sunday.

Day One matches…

As seems to be the way with these recent new tournaments in the UK, the bookies are pretty slow in getting their markets up.

That’s especially the case with a team event like this one, as the match line-ups can tend to chop and change at short notice, with captains selecting their players.

Monday’s match schedule includes a few very short prices. With Kyle Edmund heavy odds-on at 1/12 (1.08) to beat Anton Matusevich, for example.

In the early 12 noon match, Johanna Konta is the same short 1/12 price to beat recent Progress Tour Women’s Championships runner-up, Jodie-Anna Burrage. This will be Konta’s first foray into competitive play since pre-lockdown, at the start of March. Burrage as a 6/1 outsider could cause a few problems if Jo is rusty.

Boulter v Raducanu today…

The match for us today is the women’s encounter between Progress Tour winner Katie Boulter and 17-year-old Emma Raducanu, due on court at 5pm or later…

Teenager Raducanu has shown some good form in lower-level events in 2020. And with age very much on her side, Emma could prove one to watch in British women’s tennis in the years to come.

Right now, though, 23-year-old Boulter – who turns 24 on Saturday – is the player to follow. Katie is a force to be reckoned with when fit, and looks the best-equipped woman to take up the British No.1 mantel in future seasons, behind the established top player Konta, in my opinion (Boulter is younger than both Konta and Heather Watson).

Boulter won six out of six matches from 14th – 18th July to lift the Progress Tour trophy on these courts. The career-to-date head-to-head v Raducanu is 1-0 to Boulter, with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 score-line recorded on the ITF circuit last year.

At odds of 4/6 (1.67) in the Match Winner market, Katie is my pick to beat her young opponent today.

Battle of the Brits Team Tennis:

5pm+

  • Katie Boulter to beat Emma Raducanu is 4/6 (1.67) with Bet365, Betway, 20/33 (1.6) NetBet, 10Bet

I’ll be back tomorrow morning with my analysis and advice for day two.

Enjoy the tennis,

Best wishes,
