Upsets on Day One…

Day one of the Battle of the Brits Team Tennis was a day of the ‘dogs…

Four matches featured significant upsets on the odds and pre-match favouritism. Including Cameron Norrie beating British men’s No.1 Dan Evans at 3/1. And the biggest one of the day, Jodie Burrage brushing aside women’s No.1 Jo Konta at 6/1.

As I said on Monday morning, the bookies were initially slow in getting their match prices up for this event. That 6/1 (7.0) Burrage price didn’t appear until just before 10am. The match started at 12 noon…

That said, Burrage was down to 9/2 (5.5) with Bet365 before the first ball was hit, so maybe a few people had time to jump on the upset. Was it you?

My day one pick Katie Boulter was also on the end of a surprise result. With Boulter and Konta both losing in straight sets yesterday, their form looks hard to read going into their match against each other today. Boulter is a 2/1 (3.0) outsider for that encounter.

4/1 shots for today…

Of course, you & I do most of our business on the underdog end of the tennis prices. We’re going back to our summer 2-1 Set Betting score ‘strategy’ today. It’s served us well with a handful of 2-1 results in the region of 4/1 and 5/1 in the post-lockdown competitions.

The two matches & players I like for this route on day two at the National Tennis Centre are Kyle Edmund against Dan Evans, and Alicia Barnett against Maia Lumsden…

Evans v Edmund is the match of the day on paper. These two were the finalists in the men’s Battle of the Brits tournament at this venue last month. Evans was a 2-0 winner that day. But that was to date his only career victory over Edmund. Kyle leads the head-to-head, 3-1.

Evans lost his opening match here yesterday, while Edmund justified his odds-on match prices to win in straight sets. Kyle is the slight underdog today, at around Evens (2.0). For around 4/1 (5.0), the 2-1 score-line appeals as the bigger-price option.

In the women’s, I like Barnett to repeat what she did against a somewhat ailing Lumsden at the Progress Tour a fortnight ago, and edge past the favourite with a three-set win…

Lumsden was my selection that week, but Maia flagged a bit in her matches, showing glimpses of her best game, but ultimately not at full match fitness after a long delay off court this year.

Barnett is a 6/5 (2.2) underdog in the Match Winner market today. The 2-1 Set Betting pick at 5/1 (6.0) stands out nicely. We’ve seen plenty of women’s matches go this way already this summer…
