The return of our Sunday Night Club…

Thursday 30th July 2020

In your Ones to Watch email today:

  • Taking the positives…
  • Tournament calendar for August…
  • WTA Palermo next week…

Back to the sole purpose…

Team tennis is a strange beast. Tennis is essentially a singular sport. You play to win for yourself, to get through to the next round. In team events, you’re playing for your teammates, and sometimes for your country. And you’re competing for ‘points,’ not for knockout places.

Over in the States, the Americans play a lot of team tennis. Especially the players that come through the college system.

Over the last couple of weeks, the World Team Tennis competition has seen big US names likes Sofia Kenin, Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens on the roster. Lining up with glitzy team names like Chicago Smash, Vegas Rollers and the Springfield Lasers.

Here in the UK, the Battle of the Brits Team Tennis is providing a lively enough distraction this week. The players seem to be enjoying it – and up for it. And the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton is once again putting on a well-organised event, in these post-lockdown conditions.

But… I’ll be honest. What I’m really looking forward to. What we’ve really been waiting for. Since March, when the pro tours were initially suspended due to the coronavirus crisis. What we really want is the weekly ATP & WTA tournaments back. And the Grand Slams when they come along, too.

Next week, some of the normal business is set to resume…

Taking the positives…

The 2020 tennis calendar has taken a big hit. Let’s not try and hide that. In fact, it’s been decimated. Since Indian Wells got scrubbed out in March, we’ve seen Wimbledon cancelled for the first time since World War II. And a long list of events marked as ‘suspended’ or ‘cancelled’ on the official ATP & WTA tournament schedules.

On the Grand Slam front, the US Open is – as I write – going ahead on 31st August. With the French Open due to follow at the end of September.

Today’s big tennis news is that women’s World No.1, Ashleigh Barty, has announced that she won’t be travelling to the USA this year. That means the Australian will definitely miss the US Open, and the re-scheduled Cincinnati Open (moved to New York), too. Barty is the defending champion at the French Open. It remains to be seen if she’ll feel safe to travel to Paris in September.

Let’s take some positives, though. The pro tours are set to resume in August. Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have entered the New York event prior to the US Open…

The first event back is with the women, at WTA Palermo next week, starting on Monday. World No.2 Simona Halep has pulled out, but plenty of other established names on are the entry list. It will be so good to have a ‘normal’ tournament back…

Back in the Outright Winner game…

That Palermo tournament will be our first venture back into the weekly Outright Winner markets. This is the area where you & I do the most rewarding part of our Ones to Watch work…

Before lockdown, in January and February at the start of the 2020 season, we got five players into finals at Each Way prices. Landing winners at 10/1, 16/1 and 50/1. And half-the-odds runner-up payouts on Each Way picks at 22/1 and 25/1.

We will be right back in action, going for prices like that in the tournaments scheduled on the August calendar, and beyond…

Before the tennis was suspended, 2020 had started with 69% of tournament finalists at odds of 10/1+, and 41% of events seeing the trophy match contended by players at 50/1+. Those are very encouraging numbers for underdog hunters like us.

So far this season, on average, one in four of our Ones to Watch Outright Winner picks have reached the semi finals or final. That strike-rate suggests we’ll get plenty of chances to land our next ‘big one,’ as we did with 50/1 Kenin at the Australian Open in January.

The return of our Sunday Night Club…

Most weeks of the normal season, the ATP & WTA tournaments start on a Monday.

In order to get our Outright Winner picks in the book ASAP at the best prices, I email you with our first look at the markets and players to watch on a Sunday night. And we call this… the Sunday Night Club.

That will be the case this weekend, with Monday 3rd August seeing the first WTA tournament since March.

Throughout the rest of 2020, if the tournaments are on, you’ll often be hearing from me on Sunday nights, or early Monday morning. Keep an eye on your emails around those times.

  • I’ll be working to the weekly tournament schedule and time differences, depending on the event locations. I’ll keep you posted with each week’s plans in frequent email updates to you

If you don’t hear from me before (there may yet be more opportunities for us in the Battle of the Brits Team Tennis this week), I’ll be in your inbox for sure this Sunday night. With our first look at the WTA Palermo draw. And if the prices suit, a nice Each Way selection or two in the Outright Winner market.

See you for Sunday Night Club…

Enjoy the tennis,

Best wishes,
