Two to follow in Newport - at 7/1 and 20/1...

Wednesday 14th July 2021

In Ones to Watch today:

  • ATP Newport…
  • Experience at 7/1…
  • Youth at 20/1…

Wimbledon is over, but there’s still one more grass court tournament left to play this month…

Hall of Fame this week…

ATP Newport – otherwise known as the Hall of Fame Championship, Rhode Island – is in its traditional post-Wimbledon slot.

This is also the only grass event on the tour played in the USA.

Previous years have seen us target Americans and big servers at this event. Eight of the last 11 winners have been American, including four Newport titles for 6’10” John Isner. Big John isn’t here this time, but another veteran ace-machine is still going…

The 42-year-old Ivo Karlovic won his 1st round match as the underdog yesterday, and is now around 25/1 for the title (from 40/1 on Tuesday). The 6’11” Croatian won this tournament in 2016, and also made the finals in 2014 & 2015.

Karlovic has a tough assignment today though, taking on 2019 runner-up Alexander Bublik, who is a 4/1 second-favourite for the Hall of Fame trophy this week. The winner will progress to the quarter finals.

Experience at 7/1…

I like two players here, one in each side of the draw…

Going for experience, the ever-motivated Kevin Anderson is one to follow at 7/1. The 35-year-old, 6’8” South African is a former Wimbledon finalist, and has the serve and shots to perform well on grass, even now with age against him. He’s the favourite to win his match today, and having come from several big injury setbacks in recent times, you won’t find anyone on the tour keener and more committed to win another title than Kevin.

Youth at 20/1…

In the bottom half of the Newport draw, youngster Jenson Brooksby could turn out to be the pick of the prices. The 20-year-old has hardly any specific grass form to point to, but that doesn’t matter as much when we’re talking about a newcomer at this level. Brooksby won his 1st round match 2-0, and while today’s opponent will be tough – Denis Kudla likes the grass – Jenson beat his older compatriot in their only previous ATP meeting. That match was on hard courts in Orlando, at a lower-tier Challenger final in April of this year.

Brooksby is having a brilliant season on the Challenger Tour, entering five tournaments at that level, reaching the final in four of them – and lifting the trophy in three. This young American is one to watch for the future. And at 20/1, he could make his mark on the main tour as early as this week…
