Opelka serves his way into the Atlanta quarter finals...

Thursday 29th July 2021

In Ones to Watch today:

  • ATP Atlanta…
  • 16/1 Opelka…
  • Quarter Finals…

My Olympic picks didn’t make it to the quarter finals. But we were right to expect shocks and upsets in the women’s tennis event in Tokyo…

The day after we got involved, Japanese star and ‘face of the games’ Naomi Osaka crashed out of the tournament in straight sets. Following on from an early exit for world no.1, Ash Barty.

Belinda Bencic is through to the final to compete for the gold medal. The Swiss player was trading as high as 80/1 at the start of the competition.

Opelka serves his way into the Atlanta quarter finals…

Over on the standard pro tennis tours, we’ve got a 16/1 shot running for us at ATP Atlanta in the United States. Reilly Opelka dropped his opening service game last night, but sorted his serve out after that – raining down a total of 25 aces, and winning through via two tiebreak sets, 7-6, 7-6.

Opelka will compete in the quarter finals on Friday. He’s got a tough assignment there, but it’s by no means beyond his capabilities to beat compatriot, Taylor Fritz.

The career head-to-head is a resounding 6-1 to Fritz. But a closer look at those match scores shows it’s usually pretty close between these two big-serving Americans when they meet on hard courts, as they will again here…

Four of the last seven sets they’ve played against each other on hard courts have gone to a tiebreak (7-6). Expect to see something similar tomorrow. If our 6’11” man serves as he can do, then Opelka can upset the odds here, and reach the semis.

Staying in North America next week…

Next week the focus remains on the USA, where there are a couple more tournaments in the North American hard-court swing, as we build up to the US Open in New York at the end of August.

I’ll be back next week, on the search for appealing outsiders at attractive Each Way prices at ATP Washington, and WTA San Jose.

Recent Washington tournaments have produced finalists at 20/1, 25/1, and 100/1. The past two renewals of San Jose have seen a 40/1 champion, and a 33/1 runner-up. We’ll be on the lookout for prices like those…

Enjoy the tennis…

Best wishes,

Tom Wilson
