Ones to Watch: 100/1 early-bird for the US Open...
Monday 14th July 2025
We may not have landed a big one at Wimbledon this time…
But 80/1 Belinda Bencic getting to the semi final is nevertheless an example of our big-odds approach once again putting us into an exciting position…
Eric J gets it. He emailed in with this comment:
“Regardless of the result, I am sitting on a 80/1 shot in the last four..... Unbelievable.
Many thanks and please keep the great selections coming”
Here at Ones to Watch, in the tournament Outright Winner markets, we specialise in finding appealing outsiders at attractive Each Way prices…
And we’re doing pretty well at that…
Since the end of last summer, we’ve gone deep in every Grand Slam. Franking our aggressive, high-odds approach:
Taylor Fritz at the US Open @ 66/1 - runner-up (Each Way payout)
Madison Keys at the Australian Open @ 100/1 - WINNER
Lorenzo Musetti at the French Open @ 100/1 - semi final
Belinda Bencic at Wimbledon @ 80/1 - semi final
At the giant odds we go for, it’s always going to be a marathon and not a sprint. And there’s always the promise of the next big event/ underdog/ finalist/ winner, just around the corner…
Talking of which…
Getting a taste of the Big Apple…
The US Open is the next Grand Slam on the calendar, taking place in New York from 24th August - 7th September.
There’s plenty of recent ‘upset’ history, with the final Major of the year coming at the end of a gruelling spring-summer campaign for the players…
If you’re a long-time Ones to Watch follower then you will no doubt recall Sloane Stephens winning the US Open for us at 40/1 in 2017…
The very next year, a shortlisted Ones to Watch youngster by the name of Naomi Osaka won her first Grand Slam title in New York. She was 50/1. When she won it again two years later in 2020, Osaka went off as an 11/2 (6.5) favourite.
In between, a 19-year-old Bianca Andreescu won her maiden (and to date, only) Grand Slam title. Going off at Flushing Meadows on day one at 14/1 after a stellar breakthrough season - having started the year at 100/1 for the US Open in the ante-post market…
The most famous one of recent times is of course Emma Raducanu’s dream run in 2021. Making history by becoming the first player in the Open era to come through qualifying and win a Grand Slam singles title. Raducanu was a 100/1 shot there.
Another rank outsider in the odds was Leylah Fernandez, who finished runner-up to Raducanu, from a starting price of anything from 100/1 right up to 500/1.
With the 2025 trip to the Big Apple not far off, let’s get an early-bird name in the book for the women’s US Open today…
At the 2021 event, Canada’s Leylah Fernandez became the first player of south-east Asian descent (Filipino) to reach the final. She’s also left-handed. And our 2025 Ones to Watch name has those two things in common with Fernandez…
ALEXANDRA EALA is already making history this year. The 20-year-old reached the Miami Open semi finals in March, from massive triple-figure odds (500/1)...
I’ve mentioned before the link between players doing well at the annual March ‘Sunshine Double’ in Indian Wells and Miami, and then going on to do very well on the most prestigious North American hard courts of them all, at the US Open. For example, Osaka won Indian Wells in March 2018, and then the US Open later that year. Andreescu pulled off the exact same combo in 2019.
Last month, Eala was at it again. Reaching a debut final on the WTA Tour (at 18/1). That Eastbourne final ended up being a bit of a heartbreaker for Alexandra, as she had multiple match points for the trophy, but just missed out. An immediate slump after that galling loss was understandable, and there was no shame anyway in losing in a final set against the defending champion Barbora Krejcikova in the 1st round at Wimbledon last week.
On reflection, the youngster will surely acknowledge what an achievement it was to become the first player from the Philippines to reach a WTA final. The next goal is clear, and that’s to win a trophy…
That Eastbourne run on the grass helped Eala climb to no.56 in the world rankings. More Filipino tennis history was made there.
Considering that all five of Eala’s lower-tier (ITF) titles came on hard courts as a teenager. And that she also won the US Open Girls’ title in 2022…
We should get the exciting left-hander in the book as an early-bird longshot for the main event coming up in New York next month…
Crucially, as with many of our well-starred Ones to Watch youngsters in the women’s game, Alexandra Eala looks to have that extra-special, no-fear X Factor that can help her do big things on the big stage: she loves to attack the ball, and appears to relish taking on higher-ranked opponents…
During that breakout run at the Miami Open this spring, Eala beat not one, not two, but three Grand Slam champions: Iga Swiatek, Jelena Ostapenko, and Madison Keys.
Not all bookies are up as I write. Expect more to add Eala to their list as the summer continues. But there is certainly enough 100/1 on the table for us to get involved today, and strike our first bet for the US Open 2025…

I’m on holiday this week. I’ll be back next week, when we'll be off to the States to hunt out the outsider opportunities for the ATP & WTA Tour events taking place in Washington D.C, as the build-up to the US Open begins…
Enjoy the tennis…
Best wishes,
