A 12/1 shot for the seaside…

Quarters for Querrey…

Thing have been quiet for us since 25/1 Sloane Stephens made the French Open final earlier this month.

I’m sharpening my pencil and doing my homework, ready the big one at Wimbledon which is now just one week away…

Last week our 22/1 shot Sam Querrey made the quarter finals at Queen’s, going down to eventual winner Marin Cilic (6/1) – who beat 4/1 tournament favourite Novak Djokovic in the final.

The grass court season in the build-up to SW19 is a short one and as such, difficult to call. I haven’t had many selections recently but that’s okay. We’re biding our time before we go daily again at Wimbledon, starting next Monday, 2nd July.

This week sees the final three grass events on the pre-Wimbledon schedule: ATP Eastbourne, ATP Antalya and WTA Eastbourne.

It’s the women’s event by the coast that gets my attention…

A 12/1 shot for the seaside…

This year’s WTA Eastbourne draw is a competitive one, with the likes of Petra Kvitova (5/1), reigning champion Karolina Pliskova (9/1), Ashleigh Barty (14/1) and Magdalena Rybarikova (20/1) all in the mix – and all previous winners and finalists at various grass court events.

Those four have all played a lot of tennis recently and with Wimbledon just days away, I wouldn’t be surprised if one or more of them don’t make it far this week – be it through injury withdrawal or defeat.

One player who could hang around until the end this week though is Angelique Kerber (12/1). The German is one of the fittest players on the tour and with just one competitive grass court match under her belt so far this season, she will be keen to get some court time and match action ready for the trip to SW19.

Kerber is a former Wimbledon finalist (runner-up 2016) and semi-finalist. She is also a two-time finalist here at Eastbourne (2014, 2012), and made the quarter finals last year.

The 30-year-old German had a bit of a slump after winning the Australian Open and US Open and reaching World No.1 in 2016, but won her first WTA title since then earlier this year and looks like she is enjoying the game and hungry for success once more.
