French Open results – and this week’s picks…

Monday 10th June 2019

In your Ones to Watch email today:

  • Grass court season begins…
  • This week’s picks at 11/1 and 12/1…
  • Play starts 10am…

Rafa makes it 12…

It’s always good to end a tournament on a winner. If you’ll excuse the pun, the Double Faults stats ‘served’ us well in the French Open Men’s Final.

Our 11/8 (2.38) pick Dominic Thiem got the only Double Fault of the match, landing our Most Double Faults pick (result: 1-0).

Rafael Nadal continues to break his own records, racking up a 12th French Open title with an ultimately commanding 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 victory.

French Open – final results…

After 40/1 Each Way pick Marketa Vondrousova was runner-up in the Women’s on Sunday, we finished the French Open with just above 11 pts profit overall, for a 26% ROI.

Based on the advice given out over the course of the tournament, here’s the final profit & loss summary:

Staked = 44 pts
Returned = 55.68 pts
Profit/ Loss = +11.68 pts
ROI = 26.55%

Grass court season begins…

They say there’s no rest for the wicked. The clay court season ended yesterday. The grass court season starts today…

There are just three weeks to go until Wimbledon (1st July). The June calendar contains a total of 11 grass court events in the build-up to the big one at SW19.

The fun starts with four tournaments across the ATP & WTA Tours this week. The men are in Stuttgart, the women are in Nottingham – and both the men & women are in s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands.

Ones to Watch this week – at 11/1 and 12/1…

ATP Tour:

At ATP s-Hertogenbosch we’re taking on the young favourite by backing a grass court veteran.

Stefanos Tsitsipas heads the betting at around 2/1 (3.00) – and shorter with most bookies. With this tournament coming straight after the French Open on clay, I don’t like that price at all. The 20-year-old Greek star is at a career-high of No.6 in the rankings and if he is going to make a big statement on grass this summer, then he’ll probably end up saving his best for Wimbledon. So far in his young career, Tsitsipas is yet to get past the quarter final stage of a grass event. That was here in the Netherlands last year, and the man who beat him was Richard Gasquet

At 12/1, the Frenchman is the one to watch here. Gasquet is the reigning champion at s-Hertogenbosch. He was 5/1 this time last year. As his three career ATP titles at Montpellier suggest, Richard is a racehorse with favourite tracks…

Grass has always been the best ‘track’ for his serve & volley skills and sumptuous one-handed backhand. Gasquet is a two-time semi-finalist at Wimbledon – and not many players can say that.

Age 32 and with a patchy injury record, Gasquet’s best days are undoubtedly behind him. However, he can still be dangerous when the conditions are right. And a small-scale tournament like this – on grass, where he’s won before – fits the bill nicely.

WTA Tour:

In this week’s women’s events things look as tricky (= wide open) as ever. I could name-drop any number of players. But the one that I like most is our Ones to Watch in 2019 youngster, Dayana Yastremska

The 19-year-old from the Ukraine is 11/1 to win WTA Nottingham this week. She’s already won two tournaments at similar prices this season. Claiming the WTA Hua Hin title on hard courts in January and the WTA Strasbourg title on clay in May.

Yastremska is very much on the up and although she’s still hit & miss as she aims to add consistency to her game – her power and shot-making ability is there for all to see…

As I’ve said before, Dayana is the kind of streaky power-player that will blast her way through the draw on a good week. Her three titles to date have all come at International level events, which is the lowest tournament bracket of the main WTA Tour. Nottingham fits that criteria.

Things are opened up even more here with the news on Sunday that French Open semi-finalist Johanna Konta has pulled out of Nottingham. That’s one of the main contenders out before day one has even begun.

These days we’re seeing players win trophies on all surfaces. Yastremska has the serve, raw power and flat shots to do damage on a skidding grass court. This week’s draw looks good for her. The one hurdle is Caroline Garcia, but Dayana beat her in an epic final in Strasbourg last month – and I’d much rather trust the up & coming Yastremska at 10/1+ than the sometimes flakey Garcia at 7/1.
