A new month is here, and the new-looking tennis schedule continues with the Generali Austria Pro Series the focus of our attention today…

Rodionov v Kopp…

Jurij Rodionov is Austria’s current No.4 ranked played. Age 21, the 6’3” youngster is expected to go higher up the rankings in the next few years. He’s at a career-best No.168 in the world, from No.299 at the end of 2019, so you can see the climb he’s making.

Rodionov takes on a fellow Austrian hope today, 20-year-old Sandro Kopp. Sitting down the rankings order at No.800, the signs are that Kopp is better player than his ranking suggests, and he just needs more matches in more events to get the points under his belt.

I expect this afternoon’s clay-court encounter to be competitive…

So far at this new event, Rodionov has won two out of three matches. All three of those matches last week required the full three sets, including a pair of 2-1 wins. Rodionov started as the favourite in the betting on all three occasions, but made hard work of it each time.

Kopp has punched above his weight so far, winning his opened match 2-1 when priced as the 13/8 (2.63) match underdog. And taking a set off World No.3 and Austria’s star player, Dominic Thiem, before losing 2-1. Kopp went into that match as a huge 20/1 outsider. Winning a set against Thiem represents a shock result in itself. Overall, Sandro has won two out of three matches so far in this Austria Pro Series.

Take the 2-1 route at 11/2…

When you look at the 600+ gap between these two young men in the rankings, you can see why Rodionov is a short favourite to win today at 2/5 (1.40), on paper.

However, rankings do not tell the whole story, and Kopp has already outperformed his price a couple of times in this Austria Pro Series event. There could be more to come from the 20-year-old today, against an opponent who has not had much plain sailing here so far…

Kopp is a top price 2/1 (3.00) for the upset win. I’m keen to get the biggest price possible on the underdog though, and the current form makes the 2-1 Set Betting option catch the eye at 11/2+ (6.50+).
