Back Bianca and Belinda…
Monday 11th March 2019
In your Ones to Watch email today:
Two for this week – at 30/1 and 33/1…
We didn’t have the best start in Indian Wells last week. We lost Stefanos Tsitsipas (40/1), Petra Kvitova (11/1) and Dayana Yastremska (100/1) in the opening rounds. The match winner treble on that knockout combo would’ve been 35/1.
Things look brighter moving into this week…
On Sunday, Daniil Medvedev (66/1) and Qiang Wang (100/1) both won through to the next round.
And with pre-tournament 6/1 favourite Serena Williams retiring from her match yesterday, that has helped open up the bottom half of the WTA Indian Wells draw – with 100/1 Wang now trading at 33/1.
Wang’s next opponent is player we backed recently at 9/1 (made WTA Acapulco semi finals), Bianca Vanessa Andreescu. The 18-year-old was in my initial thinking for Indian Wells but after playing a lot of matches recently, I wanted to see what shape she was in going into this big tournament. After back-to-back 2-0 wins in the 2nd & 3rd Rounds, the answer is: she’s looking good. The teenager has now won 13 of her last 14 matches on hard courts.
Andreescu is a young player to follow this year. Backing her her at 30/1 and 28/1 this week means we’ll be guaranteed a player in the quarter finals in this bottom half of the draw, with Andreescu up against our 100/1 pick Qiang Wang next.
In the top half of the draw, World No.1 and reigning Indian Wells champion Naomi Osaka looms large. But as we see time and time again on the WTA Tour, no-one is unbeatable. And with a change of coach and an ever-increasing spotlight on the young Japanese star, it’s by no means a given that Osaka will romp through to the final again here…
One form player with perhaps a best-ever opportunity to beat Osaka is the resurgent Belinda Bencic. Back from injury and with time still very much on her side, we’ve already got Bencic in the book as a big-price outsider for Wimbledon.
The Swiss youngster turned 22 years of age on Sunday. Her birthday fell on a ‘rest day’ in-between matches here at Indian Wells. Like Andreescu, I was waiting to see how Bencic looked after a gruelling run to the WTA Dubai title last time out. Again, the answer is pretty good. Belinda won her opening match in straight sets, taking her winning streak to nine matches.
Bencic beat four Top 10 players in a row in Dubai, including former No.1 Simona Halep. Her form and confidence looks to be at an all-time high. At 33/1 and 28/1, we can back her today at the same prices that she started the tournament at.

P.S
Cheltenham Festival starts tomorrow. This is the World Cup of racing. It’s massive. My colleague Nick Pullen is the man to listen to. When someone gives you a 100/1 winner at the Grand National, you tend to listen to them. Last year at Cheltenham, Nick delivered bigtime, with the star bet being a 33/1 winner in the Coral Cup.
