WTA Monterrey – add Tamara today at 25/1…
Thursday 5th March 2020
In your Ones to Watch email today:
We’ve had three Ones to Watch picks this week, and heading into today’s schedule we have all three still standing…
The latest from Lyon…
At WTA Lyon, we have Alison Van Uytvanck and Oceane Dodin both through to the quarter finals in the top half of the draw.
We backed Van Uytvanck at 7/1 – 10/1 at the start of the week. The Belgian is something of an indoor hard court specialist. She’s won through the opening two rounds here, with a 2-0 and then a 2-1 victory. Alison is now 6/1.
Dodin was briefly 33/1 with Paddy Power & Betfair Sportsbook on Sunday night, but closer to 16/1 in general.
The French 23-year-old was a 2-0 winner on Wednesday evening. And after scheduled next opponent Jill Teichmann withdrew injured, our player has been handed a Walkover to the quarter finals. The bookies now have Dodin at 8/1.
Add Tamara today…
In Mexico at WTA Monterrey, we’re on Anastasia Potapova at 22/1 or 20/1. The 18-year-old is through to the 2nd round and now a 14/1 shot, but to be honest her 1st round victory was a bit too messy for comfort…
Potapova won the first set against World No.148 Giulia Gatto-Monticone, and was 4-1 up in the second. However, the young Russian blew that lead, and the match was levelled. Then, in the final set, Anastasia was 5-0 and 40-0 up – as close as you can get to winning a tennis match. That lead went, too. World No.89 Potapova eventually got the job done, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
This evening’s opponent is our big-price pick from last week in Mexico, WTA Acapulco quarter-finalist Tamara Zidansek…
With former World No.1 Victoria Azarenka in the 1st round, I hesitated on naming Zidansek at first this week. But the Slovenian was a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 winner in that match. And with a dangerous go-for-broke shot-making approach, she could trouble a potentially wobbly Potapova in Monterrey this evening (5pm, UK time)…
The bookies make our original pick the match favourite, with Potapova priced at 3/4 (1.75) and Zidansek a slight underdog at 11/10 (2.10).
However, with Zidansek a threat here and odds of 25/1, 22/1 and 20/1 Each Way still available in the Outright Winner market (from 50/1 on day one). My advice is to get Tamara in the book, too – and in doing so guarantee we have a player going through to the Monterrey quarter finals.
We’re sticking with our outsider-odds approach…
We were right to avoid the 16/1 ‘bandwagon bet’ on Heather Watson in Monterrey. Last week’s Acapulco winner was unable to progress in pursuit of a Mexican double this week, losing in the 1st round, and getting into another one of those energy-sapping three-set battles that I mentioned. Watson lost 7-6, 3-6, 7-5 v underdog Tatiana Maria.
Big names Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens have also been knocked out in the opening two rounds in Monterrey.
You can watch Zidansek v Potapova on Amazon Prime Video today, from 5pm.
Van Uytvanck and Dodin both play their quarter final matches in Lyon on Friday. Those matches will be shown live on Amazon, too.
Ones to Watch:
Outright Winner pick – Each Way
Each Way terms: 1/2 odds 1-2 places.
Note: some bookies are now going reduced terms of 1/3 odds Each Way for Monterrey. Be sure to take the better, 1/2 odds terms with the bookies listed above.
Indian Wells starts next Wednesday…
I’ll be back again in the next few days. Next week we have Indian Wells to look forward to, starting from Wednesday, 11th March.
With that being the case, we won’t have a ‘Sunday Night Club’ email this week. But we’ll be on the ball with the early Indian Wells prices before play starts Wednesday in the women’s event and Thursday in the men’s.
Enjoy the tennis…
Best wishes,
Tom Wilson
