Match points and quarter finals…

I don’t know if you got a chance to watch the match between Tamara Zidansek and Anastasia Potapova on Thursday evening.

But if you did, then you’ll have seen why I was keen to get Zidansek onside, along with our initial WTA Monterrey tournament pick on Potatova.

The final result says that Potapova won two sets to one. But she very, very nearly lost two-nil…

Zidansek was ahead 6-1, 5-3 and serving for the match at 40-0. All three of those match points came and went. Potapova, somehow, hung on. And then won that second set, 7-6. Before accelerating away in the decider, 6-1.

In that second set, Potapova was on the brink of tears at a changeover, flailing her arms at her coach, indicating that this match was all but gone, that her arm hurt and she couldn’t get a feel on her forehand.

I don’t know what magic was worked in the following medical timeout, but the 18-year-old Russian looked to have a mental breakthrough, deciding to hit the ball as hard as she could, and aggressively muscle her way into the match.

In other words, against all odds, Potapova refused to lose. And that’s certainly a good trait. Our 20/1+ Monterrey pick moves onto the quarter finals this evening, where she’ll be the match underdog against Johanna Konta (7.30pm, UK time).

Meanwhile, in France…

Another player that makes a living from refusing to lose is Sofia Kenin. Our 50/1 Australian Open friend saved match point yesterday, too, coming from a set and a break down to stay in contention as the tournament favourite in Lyon.

Indoors in France, we’ve got two players in the WTA Lyon quarter finals

Oceane Dodin is up first, the French player the outsider as she takes on the still-standing Kenin from 4.30pm. Dodin went in the book at the start of the week at general odds in the region of 16/1.

After that, Alison Van Uytvanck goes up against home hope Caroline Garcia in a 50-50 match on the odds. The Belgian is our 7/1 – 10/1 pick this week. It’s all to play for.

Indian Wells next week, big prices the plan…

Once again, we’re doing well with our strike-rate of getting Ones to Watch picks into quarter finals at decent prices. We don’t know when the next run to the final will come for an Each Way payout or win. But we’re making plenty of right moves.

I’ll be back on Tuesday, when we’ll be getting ourselves ready for March Mayhem, the Sunshine Double… Indian Wells and then the Miami Open.

Last year at Indian Wells we landed a 30/1 winner. The year before, an 80/1 Each Way finalist. Lots to look forward to…

Enjoy the tennis…

Best wishes,

Oliver Upstone
