Teenager on the rise - and a French pick for Tuesday...
Monday 1st March 2021
In your Ones to Watch email today:
Keep the faith with Felix…
Felix Auger-Aliassime was sent crashing out in the Rotterdam 1st round this afternoon.
My 28/1 Ones to Watch pick for this week’s tournament, the young Canadian was taken down 7-6, 6-1 by the returning-from-injury Kei Nishikori. That was a 12/5 (3.4) match upset on the day.
Felix has reached seven finals in his young career… but I haven’t backed him in any of those tournaments.
Instead, my seven-time Auger-Aliassime bet-book looks like this:
2019 – ATP Monte Carlo @ 80/1 – 2nd Round
2019 – ATP Barcelona @ 66/1 – 2nd Round
2019 – ATP Montreal @ 25/1 – 3rd Round
2020 – ATP Acapulco @ 20/1 – 2nd Round
2020 – US Open @ 50/1 – 4th Round
2020 – ATP Paris @ 40/1 – 1st Round
2021 – ATP Rotterdam @ 28/1 – 1st Round
Am I disheartened? No way…
Up until January 2020, Sofia Kenin was also a seven-time losing tournament selection for me…
But then Kenin struck big. Landing the Australian Open at 50/1. And reaching the French Open final as a 40/1 Each Way pick.
The lesson being? Keep the faith. Felix is a class player. He’s only 20 years old. There will be good days – and more big-price opportunities – to come.
Teenager on the rise…
Talking of Kenin, here’s another young woman that we can expect to feature in our coverage in the months and years to come…
Last month, Ones to Watch member David C wrote in to ask my opinion of the 18-year-old Dane, Clara Tauson:
“Another interesting youngster to watch out for - Clara Tauson. Similar mould to Kenin?”
Yes indeed, David. The teenager scored a big win in the WTA Lyon 1st round today, blowing away the tournament favourite and top seed, Ekaterina Alexandrova, in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. The match upset was priced at 2/1.
Clara Tauson is one to look out for from here on in. I’ll be keeping an eye on the prices.
Dodin v Garcia…
I’ve got an early pick for Tuesday’s matches in Lyon. Once again, we want to be on the side of the underdog…
Oceane Dodin to beat Carolina Garcia at 11/8 (2.38).
As I’ve already noted a couple of times this season, Garcia is hard to trust. The Frenchwoman has lost three matches in a row in straight sets.
Compatriot Dodin has been a Ones to Watch pick at indoor hard-court events before. While a top price of 16/1 to go all the way isn’t that exciting in Lyon this week, I do like her chances of piling more misery on Garcia in the 1st round.
In the 24-year-old’s career to date, Oceane has won more matches on indoor hard courts than on any other surface (69% win-rate indoors).

I’ll be back over the next few days with more from this week’s tournaments – in Lyon, Doha, Rotterdam, and Buenos Aires.
Enjoy the tennis…
Best wishes,
