Indian Wells - Day 11: Grab the popcorn tonight...
Saturday 16th March 2024
Welcome to Day 11 of your Indian Wells service…
It wasn't to be for Marta Kostyuk last night.
We can console ourselves in the knowledge that we were on the 21-year-old at 100/1 when she made her first WTA 1000 Masters semi final. Marta remains one to watch...
And we'll go again with youngsters and outsiders that catch the eye at next week's Miami Open.
No offence to Tommy Paul and Daniil Medvedev, but from a neutral's point of view, this evening's Indian Wells men's semi finals are all about the first match up on the schedule...
Jannik Sinner v Carlos Alcaraz is the big draw. These two are already 4-4 in a burgeoning career head-to-head. One which was ignited by a five-set classic at the US Open in 2022. Since that match, both men have become Grand Slam champions...
This is world no.3 Sinner, age 22. Against world no.2 Alcaraz, age 20. The top two young stars of men's tennis right now...
The bookies make Sinner the favourite today, at 8/11 (1.73). Which is understandable, as the Italian is unbeaten so far this year (16 wins in a row). And Jannik has come out on top in his last two meetings with the young Spaniard...
Alcaraz is someone you can never write off, though. Indeed, he saved match point in that US Open epic in 2022 - and went on to win the trophy. Carlito is 11/10 (2.1) today, which is as big a Match Winner price as you'll likely see for him all year, such is his standing in the sport, even at such a young age.
My take here, and it's a view shared by many I'm sure, is that we should strap-in for an exciting, blockbuster encounter this evening...
Last season's Djokovic-Alcaraz barn-burner springs to mind, with Novak winning the ATP 1000 Masters final in Cincinnati, on a final-set tiebreak: 5-7, 7-6, 7-6...
We could see an equally close and exciting scoreboard here...
From a betting point of view, with a nice price in mind, the option that jumps into my thoughts is the 'Go the Distance' market at Bet365. With odds of 9/1 for the match to be won, by either player, in a third-set tiebreak. In other words, as close as it can get...
Skybet also offer this bet at 8/1, in a 'Request-A-Bet' market called 'Deadlocked! - Match to go to a deciding third set tie-break.' Other bookies may also offer something similar in their specials markets today.
Grab the popcorn, and enjoy the match. It's live on Sky Sports at 8.30pm...
