Outright Winner pick at 14/1…
I’ve been studying the draws over the weekend, mapping out potential routes through to the finals and comparing player form, records and head-to-heads. We’ll be having more bets in the Outright Winner market over the next few days, but with play starting in the bottom half of the Women’s draw today there is one player in particular that I have a strong opinion about and want to back first of all…
That player is World No.8, Petra Kvitova. The Czech has been one of the form players on the WTA Tour so far this season, winning back to back titles after the Australian Open – and more recently back to back titles on clay in Prague and Madrid in her last two events.
Petra took the week off after Madrid and that looks a smart move to avoid burn-out before the big one here in Paris.
Traditionally, Kvitova’s powerful game is best on grass and hard courts, with her two Grand Slam wins both coming at Wimbledon. However she’s a Top 10 player and classy on all surfaces, as shown by those recent trophy wins in Prague and Madrid where she has put together an 11-match winning streak on clay.
The 28-year-old has made the semi finals here at Roland Garros once before (2012), and right now looks to be playing some of her best tennis…
Kvitova suffered a career-threatening off-court injury at the end of 2016, when an intruder attacked her with a knife in her apartment. Since returning to the tour, each tournament win has been charged with emotion, and this already fiercely competitive player now looks more driven than ever.
Petra was already known for her battling qualities, and is something of a specialist when it comes to winning from a set down or getting the job done in a deciding set. And that’s something her opponents will be all too aware of.
Kvitova is in the 4th Quarter of the draw and as such can’t meet the tournament second favourite and top player on paper in the bottom half, Elina Svitolina, until the semi finals. They are yet to meet on clay, but Kvitova leads their head-to-head, 7-1.
This is a player with a strong mental edge and winning mentality, and that’s gold-dust in a big tournament like this. Overall the draw looks pretty good for Kvitova and she goes down as our first Outright Winner pick of the fortnight at 14/1 or 12/1 Each Way.
Outright Winner – Women’s:
BET: Petra Kvitova @ 14/1 Each Way
BOOKIES: 14/1 (15.00) William Hill, 12/1 (13.00) Bet365, Skybet, Coral, Boylesports
